Rainer Feist

Rainer Feist (born April 12, 1945 in Cuxhaven ; † May 19, 2007 in Timmendorfer Strand ) was a German admiral in the German Navy . From 2000 to 2002 he was Deputy Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and Commissioner for Reservist Affairs and from 2002 to 2004 deputy NATO -Oberbefehlshaber ( Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe ; DSACEUR) at NATO headquarters SHAPE in Mons ( Belgium ).

Military career

After graduating from school, Feist signed up as an officer candidate in the Bundeswehr in 1966 . Two years later, in 1968, he successfully graduated from the Mürwik Naval School and then served as a watch and torpedo officer on board speedboats and destroyers . He then completed his training as a submarine officer from 1974 to 1975 and later the admiralty staff course at the command academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg . In 1979 Feist became the commandant of the Greif Schnellboot , which belonged to the 2nd Schnellboot Squadron in Olpenitz .

From 1981 to 1983 Feist was employed as a consultant for political and military affairs in the command staff of the armed forces in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn . After a year-long assignment as deputy commander of the 7th Schnellbootgeschwader in Kiel , Feist was head of the "Planning" department from 1984 to 1987 at the NATO headquarters BALTAP in Karup ( Denmark ). He then took over command of the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader in Olpenitz from 1987 to 1990 and was employed as a trainer at the command academy of the German Armed Forces from 1990 to 1991. Now he has been appointed head of the division for political and military affairs in the headquarters of the armed forces in Bonn. In 1994 Feist became chief of staff at the PfP coordination office at NATO headquarters SHAPE in Mons. From 1998 to 2000 he served as deputy commander and chief of staff in the fleet command in Glücksburg . In April 2000 he took over the post of commander of the Military District Command I - Coast in Kiel, which he held until September 2000. In October 2000 Feist was promoted to Vice Admiral and Deputy Inspector General of the Bundeswehr and Commissioner for Reservist Affairs.

Promoted to Admiral , Feist took over the post of Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR) on September 18, 2002 . In February 2003 he also took over the EUFOR command as operations commander of Operation Concordia in Macedonia .

On September 15, 2004, he was dismissed from active service by the Federal Minister of Defense , Peter Struck , as part of a major tattoo . Feist died of cancer on May 19, 2007 in Timmendorfer Strand . He left a wife and two sons.
