Olpenitz ( Danish : Olpenæs ) has been a district of the city of Kappeln since the territorial reform in 1970 , until then it was an independent municipality in the Eckernförde district , consisting of a village and an estate of the same name.

history

Olpenitz was first mentioned as Vlpænes in 1285 in the Lund archbishop's document (Dipl. Dan. 2, 3, 139) . The place name comes from old Danish * ulp for plover and Danish. næs ( Old Norse nes , Low German nis ) for a promontory. In High German, the ending -næs was later reinterpreted to -nitz . In the Middle Ages, Olpenitz was owned by the Danish king as a crown property. The place was part of the parish Karby in the Riesebyharde (later Schwansener Güterdisdrikt) within the Duchy of Schleswig until the German-Danish War in 1864 .

Naval base

In the second half of the 20th century, Olpenitz was best known as a base for the German Navy , which existed from 1964 to 2006. At times 1850 soldiers and 450 civilian workers were employed on the 160 hectare naval base and the ships stationed here.

"Port Olpenitz" project

In place of the disused marine port, a private investor planned to build a holiday park for 500 million euros with several hotels, more than 1000 houses and a marina with more than 1000 berths, which will be named Port Olpenitz and should be completed by 2012. Although the property was still in its early stages, the initiator had to file for bankruptcy in mid-October 2011. Parts of the first construction phase were then sold to individual investors by an insolvency administrator. In 2013, the insolvent Port Olpenitz GmbH was taken over by Helma Ferienimmobilien GmbH, which plans to complete the project under the name Ostseeresort Olpenitz by 2021 .

The North German Regatta Association would like to set up a base in the port .

Landscape protection area

The Kopperby / Olpenitz protected landscape area of 1216.25 hectares was placed under protection on October 31, 1991 (see list of protected landscape areas in the Schleswig-Flensburg district ).
