history

The Jägerbataillon 581 existed since October 7, 1990 and was mainly composed of the personnel of the disbanded Guard Regiment Friedrich Engels and Guard Regiment Hugo Eberlein of the National People's Army (NVA) as well as the training support personnel (West). The association was subordinated to Panzerbrigade 42 Brandenburg (formerly Heimatschutzbrigade 42).

On November 14, 1991, the roll call of the Jäger Battalion 581 took place on the barracks area Am Treptower Park , in which the telegraph battalion No. 1 of the Prussian Army was already housed during the imperial era . The troop flag was awarded and the first solemn pledge was made .

In autumn 1992 the battalion moved with around 750 soldiers to Berlin-Kladow in the former Montgomery barracks of the British Berlin Infantry Brigade , making it the only combat unit in the federal capital . No target exercises were carried out on the site; the Döberitz military training area was used instead . On September 14, 1993, the barracks were renamed the Blücher barracks .

On September 8, 1994, the Jäger Battalion provided a form of honor on Allied Forces Day, the military parade to see the troops from France, Great Britain and the USA from Berlin on the Straße des 17. Juni .

On May 31, 1996, the 581 Jäger Battalion, together with the 423 tank battalion from Brück, represented a formation in front of the Charlottenburg Palace at the first public vow in Berlin with 286 recruits.

In July and August 1997, 458 soldiers of the Jäger Battalion, 90% of them conscripts , were deployed during the 1997 flood of the Oder .

On September 30, 1997, the unit was subordinated from Panzerbrigade 42 Brandenburg to the Berlin site command and renamed Jägerbataillon 1 Berlin. The association was the only one of the 178 army battalions at that time to receive the right to use the city name of its location.

The unit was transferred several times to the Saaleck barracks on the Hammelburg military training area for further training. This was followed by NATO missions as part of the Implementation Force (IFOR) and Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina .

In 1998, the battalion took part in events marking the 50th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift as a military formation .

In 2000 there were first plans to dissolve the battalion with 760 soldiers and the Blücher barracks site. There were also plans to move to the General Steinhoff barracks in Berlin-Gatow.

In April 2001, 90 soldiers from the unit took part in the NATO KFOR mission in Kosovo . For the Kosovo mission around 30 fighters were trained as tank grenadiers.

On September 6, 2002, Jäger Battalion 1 bid farewell to the Berlin population with a big tattoo and an appeal to dissolve. The battalion flag was handed over to the 13th Panzer Grenadier Division in Leipzig. From 2003 the Blücher barracks was taken over by Lazarettregiment 31 ( Medical Command III in Weißenfels ) (formerly Lazarettregiment 1 from Hildesheim ).
