The armored brigade 42 Brandenburg was a brigade of the German Army . The brigade was last part of the 13th Panzer Grenadier Division . The stationing area was Brandenburg and Berlin . The association was decommissioned in 2003. The brigade was the 42nd Army Brigade of the Bundeswehr and was thus the association with the highest brigade number ever assigned in the Bundeswehr for combat troop brigades of the field army.
history
The brigade was formed from parts of the 1st Motorized Rifle Division of the disbanded National People's Army of the GDR as Homeland Security Brigade 42 and was given the heavily criticized surname “Brandenburg” . In 1995 the brigade was renamed Panzerbrigade 42. In 1997 the brigade was subordinated to the Military District Command VII / 13th Panzer Grenadier Division. After that, the brigade in the Bundeswehr structure New Army was a partially active brigade of the main defense forces for new tasks . In 1996, the subordinate Panzerjäger company was dissolved and an Panzerjägerzug ( HOT ) was integrated into each subordinate tank grenadier battalion . In addition, a driver training center and a SIRA support point were subordinated. In 1997, the Brigade continued to report to the Panzergrenadier Battalion 421 ( Brandenburg an der Havel ), the Panzergrenadier Battalion 422 (Brandenburg), the Panzer Battalion 423 ( Brück ), the Panzer Battalion 424 (Brück), the Panzer Artillery Battalion 425 ( Lehnitz ), the Panzer Pioneer Company and 420 (Lehnitz) the Jägerbataillon 581. The Jägerbataillon 581 was renamed in the fall of 1997 in Jägerbataillon 1 Berlin and left the brigade for the local command Berlin . In 1999/2000 the brigade provided soldiers for the 3rd GECON KFOR contingent in the Balkans. In 2001/2002 the brigade was deployed as the 4th GECONKFOR in Kosovo and Macedonia . In 2002 the brigade provided help during the floods on the Oder .
Panzerbataillon 423 and Panzerpionierkompanie 420 were disbanded at the end of 2002. On January 1, 2003, the 421 Panzer Grenadier Battalion and the 425 Panzer Artillery Battalion transferred to Panzer Grenadier Brigade 1 . The brigade was disbanded on June 30, 2003. The appeal for dissolution took place on December 4, 2002.

Association badge
The brigade's association badge showed the Märkischer Adler in a silver field, which is depicted in the heraldic representation as in the coat of arms of the state of Brandenburg . The actual coat of arms under the silver field was red and white and thus corresponded to the flag of Brandenburg. The Panzerbrigade 42 as well as all six "new" brigades with stationing in the new federal states had their own heraldic motif, which did not take up the symbol of the originally superior division, as was customary with the first 36 brigades of the army. One explanation for this may also be that the brigade was initially set up as a homeland security brigade without being assigned to a field division. Therefore, the brigade's edge was bordered by a silver cord with black thread plaited in, although this border was reserved for the divisions until 1990.
