Karl-Heinz Lather (born September 15, 1948 in Kehna near Marburg) is a retired general . D. of the army of the Bundeswehr . He was on 13 September 2007 to 23 September 2010, the Chief of Staff in NATO - Headquarters Europe, the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE).

Military career

Training and first uses

In 1967, after graduating from high school Philippinum in Marburg, Lather was drafted into service in the German Armed Forces and in 1968 began his officer training in the artillery . Service as a staff officer

In 1982 Lather graduated from the British Staff College in Camberley .

From 1984 Lather served as a staff officer for operations ( G3 ) in the staff of Panzerlehrbrigade 9 in Munster . In 1986 he took over a troop command again and commanded the field artillery battalion 21 in Schwalmstadt -Treysa. He then served as a staff officer for internal management and human resources (G1) in the staff of the 2nd Panzer Grenadier Division in Kassel . Service as a general

In 1993 Lather took over command of the Panzer Brigade 42 (at that time still Homeland Security Brigade 42) and the Defense District Command 84 in Potsdam with the rank of colonel . In this role he was appointed brigadier general.

In March 2001 Lather was transferred to Ulm , where he took over as Lieutenant General and Commander of the II Corps . After his appointment as lieutenant general, he was briefly deputy commander of the Army Command in Koblenz , before taking up the post of deputy commander of the Joint Subregional Command (JSRC) in Heidelberg in June 2004 , later renamed Allied Land Component Command Heidelberg (CC-Land Heidelberg), under the command of US General Burwell B. Bell took over. Three years later, on April 5, 2007, he took over the post of Commander CC-Land Heidelberg from US General David D. McKiernan , but only served in this position for a few months.

On September 13, 2007 he replaced Rainer Schuwirth , who was appointed General, as Chief of Staff at NATO Headquarters Europe, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), under the command of Bantz J. Craddock . Lieutenant General Roland Kather then took over his post in Heidelberg . Lather served in this post until 2010, first under US General Craddock and then under US Admiral James G. Stavridis .

Effective September 23, 2010, Lather handed over the post of Chief of Staff at SHAPE to General Manfred Lange . After his farewell with a big tattoo on September 27, 2010, he retired on September 30, 2010.

In addition, in summer 2010 Lather was appointed to the Bundeswehr Structural Commission, which, under the chairmanship of Frank-Jürgen Weise, worked out proposals for reforming the Bundeswehr structures.

His orders and decorations include: the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon , the Cross of Honor of the German Armed Forces in Gold , the Legion of Merit , the First Class Cross of Merit of the Czech Armed Forces , the NATO Medal , the Medal of the German Armed Forces (SFOR) and the Order of Knight of the Holy Pope New Year's Eve ( New Year's Eve ).

Private

Lather is married and has two children.

His younger brother Dietger Lather is Colonel i. G. (in the General Staff Service) and was in command of the Center for Operational Information of the Bundeswehr until the end of July 2009 .

Lather is involved in the foundation advisory board of the Catholic Peace Foundation.
