Lohr Industrie SA , based in Hangenbieten near Strasbourg, is a manufacturer of transport technology, in particular car transport trailers (for the railroad) and car transporters (on the road) as well as local transport systems.

background

The company was founded in 1963 by today's President Robert Lohr. Main business areas are the production of car transport wagons and low-floor double wagons as well as the former production of the Spur-Trolleybus (tram on rubber wheels) of the Translohr type . The company has factories in Duppigheim in Alsace as well as in Turkey, the People's Republic of China, the USA and Mexico. In addition to the German subsidiary Lohr GmbH in Kehl, the company also has other companies in various countries. The company generated sales of 320 million euros in 2007, in 2006 it was 250 million euros and in 2005 sales were 217 million euros. The company got into economic difficulties in the following years after sales had fallen to just 120 million euros in 2011 in the course of the economic crisis and the liabilities could no longer be serviced; In order to avoid bankruptcy, the Translohr tram business had to be sold in 2012, the business restructured with the loss of 200 jobs and a partial debt waiver negotiated by creditors.

Main business areas

Car transporter

Eurolohr 300 car transporter

The production of car transporters accounts for 80 percent of the company's total turnover. The focus is on the areas of car transport (Eurolohr 100 series with up to two axles, Eurolohr 300 with up to three axles and CHR as standard), mixed transport of cars and trucks (multi-ear) and heavy transport (Maxilohr with three-axle central-axle trailer). In the field of special vehicles and special transports, the semitrailers SHR and SRTC, the caravan transporter TALE and SOLO vehicles are manufactured. Trains that are closed with tarpaulins or solid walls and trains with special geometries are also produced.

Lohr Railway System

Lohr transport wagon

With suitable low-floor double wagons, Lohr Industrie developed a concept for the fast handling of containers , swap bodies and semi-trailers between road and rail (also marketed under the name Modalohr ). In the case of special wagons that are equipped with standard bogies, the loading area can be swiveled out of the track axis at an angle. It is thus possible for a tractor to park the trailer directly on the plateau via a low-lying ramp, which is then turned back into the longitudinal position. The maintenance costs of the Lohr concept could be reduced considerably compared to the previous system of the Rolling Road (RoLa) for low-floor wagons.

In 2002, freight traffic between Aiton / Bourgneuf near Chambéry in France and Orbassano near Turin in Italy was opened using the Modalohr system. In 2007 the connection from Perpignan to Luxembourg went into operation as the first part of a north-south axis. In Germany a connection between the Baltic Sea ports (Lübeck or Rostock) to Frankfurt am Main or Regensburg is planned.

Mass transit systems

Translohr in Clermont-Ferrand

Cristal / Borreal

After selling the Translohr division in 2012, the company continues to operate in the area of local transport systems:

  • Cristal : project of an electrical bus system presented in 2015; it consists of autonomous electric minibuses, which can also be linked together to form larger units.
  • Boreal : electrically driven axle unit for retrofitting conventional buses.

Translohr (sold, discontinued)

Another product from Lohr Industrie was the Translohr, a so-called Tramway sur pneumatiques . The wagons are bi - directional articulated vehicles that run exclusively on a central track, including in the depot and workshop. The vehicles have single-pole pantographs and can also be used in multiple traction if required . The wheels are housed in the articulated portals, which both optimizes the clearance profile of the railcar and allows the interior to be designed more flexibly. With the help of an auxiliary battery drive, the Translohr can cover shorter distances in the event of malfunctions, even without overhead lines.

In November 2012, the division was sold for 35 million euros to a consortium made up of Alstom -Transport and the French state fund, Fonds Stratégique d'Investissement , because the group was threatened with bankruptcy . The operation is now continued under the name NTL (New Translohr) .

Neoval (discontinued)

Siemens has been developing the successor to the Val together with the Lohr Group in the Neoval project since 2004. The trains in the Neoval system are guided by a single central rail, similar to the Translohr system, and do not require any electrical supply between the stations. The aim is to reduce the costs for the infrastructure, since no additional power rails or overhead lines are required. The system will also be able to recover and use the braking energy through a regenerative braking system . Since March 2009, the Airval, the first Neoval pre-series vehicle, has been tested on the Lohr test track in Strasbourg.

Automotive (discontinued)

Lohr FL 500

At least 218 automobiles were produced between 1977 and 1984. Initially there was the Fardier Lohr FL 500 model , later developed into the Fardier Lohr FL 501 . It resembled the Kraka and was an amphibious four-wheel drive vehicle . The two - cylinder boxer engine from Citroën with 602 cm³ displacement was mounted in the middle of the vehicle, other vehicle parts such as steering and gearbox were used by other Citroën models.
