In 1998 Volkswagen AG bought the rights to build cars under the Bugatti brand. They commissioned Italdesign to build the Bugatti EB 118 concept , a touring car with a 414 kW engine (555 hp) and the first 18-cylinder engine to drive a car. The presentation was at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris.

In 1999 the Bugatti EB 218 study was presented at the Geneva Motor Show and in the same year the Bugatti 18.3 Chiron at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main . The Bugatti Veyron EB 18.4 was finally shown at the Tokyo Motor Show . All the models mentioned had 18-cylinder engines.

Veyron 16.4 concept study

In 2000, Volkswagen founded Bugatti Automobiles SAS and introduced the EB-16/4-Veyron concept at the motor shows in Paris , Geneva and Detroit , an all-wheel drive 16-cylinder car with an output of 736 kW (1001 hp) from 8, 0 liter displacement with four turbochargers with a targeted top speed of 407 km / h. At the time, the Veyron was the most powerful and fastest supercar ever built. In acceleration tests, it reached a speed of 100 km / h after 2.5 s, 200 km / h after 7.3 s and 300 km / h after 16.8 s.

Development initially lasted until 2001, and the EB 16/4 Veyron was given an “Advanced Concept” status in advertising. At the end of 2001, Bugatti Automobiles SAS announced that the car would now be officially called Bugatti Veyron 16.4 . The start of production was initially planned for 2003. Financial and especially technical difficulties with the gearbox and the unusual, extreme requirements at speeds over 300 km / h, however, led to several delays and changes in the project manager. Production finally began in September 2005. In unofficial measurements, the Veyron exceeded its intended maximum speed by 1 km / h.

The annual production was increased to 70 units due to the long waiting times.

On June 26, 2010, the world speed record for street-legal series sports cars was set with a top speed of 431.072 km / h with a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. In August of the same year, this vehicle with 882 kW (1200 hp ) was presented to the world for the first time in Pebble Beach (USA).

In April 2013, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, a roadster, drove the fastest speed ever recorded with a roadster at 408.84 km / h. The Vitesse World Record Car Edition , limited to just eight pieces , was then presented to the world for the first time at Auto Shanghai and was sold out shortly afterwards.

At the IAA 2015, the company unveiled a show car from its Vision Gran Turismo project. With the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo, the company presents a possible new super sports car after the sale of all 450 Veyron. The design of the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo is intended to recall the great racing tradition of the 1920s and 1930s. The color scheme is reminiscent of the brand's victories in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

On November 6, 2015, the world's first exhibition halls with the new Bugatti corporate identity were opened at the same time . Further dealer locations with the new brand design are planned and should follow quickly. Bugatti currently has a total of 27 dealers in 13 countries.
