R series logo

The R model series began in 2003 with the Golf IV R32, which developed 177 kW (241 hp). Since then, R models have been the top performance vehicles of the Volkswagen brand (analogous to the RS models from Audi, for example ).

At the moment (2020) Volkswagen offers the following R models:

  • T-Roc R

Golf R

The current edition of the VW Golf R is based on the VW Golf VII . It premiered at the IAA 2013. The fourth "R generation" is powered by a turbocharged, 221 kW (300 hp) inline four-cylinder engine, which can be coupled with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch gearbox with seven stages. The in-house 4Motion all-wheel drive system is built into the Golf R as standard .

The Golf R is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine with 221 or 228 kW (300 or 310 PS) (since 2/2017), with a maximum torque of 380 Newton meters (Nm), recently 400 Nm, which is from around 1,800 rpm

The R400, a concept variant of the Golf R, with 294 kW (400 hp) was shown at Auto China 2014, but it will probably not go into series production.

Golf R convertible

The VW Golf R Cabrio is based on the VW Golf VI . It was available with an in-line four-cylinder engine with 195 kW (265 hp). However, neither four-wheel drive nor a manual gearbox is available and so the Golf R Cabrio could only be ordered with front-wheel drive and DSG.

Scirocco R

At the 2014 Geneva Motor Show , the new Scirocco R was presented together with the Scirocco facelift . Compared to its predecessor, the output of the turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder engine has been increased by 11 to 206 kW (280 hp). Like its predecessor, the Scirocco R has front-wheel drive . When the vehicle was launched, it was only available with a six-speed DSG. Production was stopped in summer 2017.

Polo R WRC

The VW Polo R WRC (rally vehicle) at the Geneva Motor Show

The VW Polo R WRC is a world rally car . This vehicle was used in the World Rally Championship and was created by Volkswagen Motorsport.

In order to comply with the FIA regulations, a near-series and street-legal so-called homologation model must be built in small series , which essentially corresponds to the competition vehicle. This model, derived from the VW Polo V , was sold by Volkswagen as the Polo R WRC Street . Based on the 2500 units required by the regulations, the Polo R WRC Street was also limited to this number. However, this has no influence on the approval of the polo as a rally vehicle, as the requirements of the regulations have already been met by building the required units of any polo. The vehicle's turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder engine has an output of 162 kW (220 hp). It is only shifted manually.

The rally version and the street version have little in common: the engine, drivetrain, chassis, body and much more have been changed and adapted within the framework of the FIA regulations. The body, for example, is based on the street version, but has been reinforced in accordance with the regulations. The rally vehicle's turbo-charged 1.6-liter gasoline engine has an output of 232 kW (315 hp), which is transferred to the wheels via an all-wheel drive system.

Earlier models

Between 2007 and 2009, Volkswagen also offered an R model of the Touareg with the 257 kW (350 PS) R50 . Between 2008 and 2010, the R36, a 221 kW R variant for the Passat, was available. From June 2006, the even more powerful GTI Cup Edition variant with 132 kW (180 PS) was offered in addition to the Polo GTI. Their appearance with aggressive front and rear aprons, widened side skirts, distinctive spoiler lip on the roof and 17-inch alloy wheels is derived directly from the vehicles used in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup. Technically, however, the Polo GTI Cup Edition is based on the normal Polo GTI. The biggest difference, apart from the changed exterior, is the brake system, which has been adapted to the increased performance, with a brake disc diameter of 312 millimeters on the front axle.

R-Line

R-Line range logo

The R-Line equipment is based on the design of the R models, both in the interior and on the exterior of the vehicle, but does not offer a performance-enhanced engine. The R-Line equipment is currently available for the Polo , Scirocco , Golf , Golf Variant , Beetle , Tiguan , Passat , Arteon , Touareg and Touran models.

Volkswagen Exclusive

With Volkswagen Exclusive , VW takes over the role of the former Volkswagen Individual GmbH . The division includes the individual design of vehicles and the selection of equipment. Exclusive equipment is currently available for the Beetle and the corresponding convertible, the Passat and the Passat Variant, the Touareg and the Golf Cabriolet.
