Car 5000

The Auto 5000 GmbH was a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG , the VW models Touran and Tiguan in Wolfsburg plant produced. It was founded in August 2001 as a result of negotiations between VW and IG Metall since November 1999 in order to set up jobs in Wolfsburg for the production of the Touran, which could be remunerated at a lower and more flexible tariff with increased working hours compared to the VW collective agreement applicable at the time . The establishment of the subsidiary was seen as a labor market project. Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder mediated the negotiations .

The name refers to the plan stated in announcements that 5,000 new employees should be hired at DM 5,000 gross wages. The concept was advertised with the slogan 5000 times 5000 .

First of all, the unemployed and people threatened with unemployment were recruited. The first 120 employees were hired in November 2001. The official three-stage selection process began in March 2002. Those who passed this took part in a three-month training course paid for by the Federal Employment Agency . They were then given a six-month and then open-ended employment contract for the Auto 5000 GmbH that has now been established. The gross wage set in the original collective agreement was DM 4,000 per month. It was planned to set up 1,500 more jobs at Auto 5000 GmbH for the construction of the VW Microbus in Hanover during the course of the project . The microbus was never built.

In the self-promotion of Volkswagen AG, the project was described as " one of the most innovative of its time " because it proves that internationally successful and competitive automobiles can be produced in Germany with modern manufacturing processes, new sales channels and innovative qualification models.

In June 2006, a long-term collective agreement was signed with the representatives of IG Metall, which also meant a wage increase of three percent for the employees of Auto 5000 GmbH. This replaced the "first Auto 5000 project wage agreement" which expired at the end of March 2006.

The number of employees who produce the VW Touran in halls 10 (body shop), 9 (paint shop) and 8 (assembly) as well as 37a, 34a and 35 of the main plant in Wolfsburg rose to around 4,000 by October 2006. In December 2007, Auto 5000 employed 4,200 people.

From November 2002 to the beginning of October 2006, a total of around 650,000 first-generation Tourans were produced in Wolfsburg. In mid-October 2006 the Touran received a so-called "facelift" and will continue to be produced by Auto 5000 GmbH. From then until July 2, 2007, 750,000 Tourans were produced. In 2008, 180,000 Tourans were manufactured at Auto 5000.

Starting in 2007, Auto 5000 also manufactured the Tiguan compact SUV, which celebrated its world premiere at the 2007 IAA and has been available since October 2007. In 2008, 16,000 vehicles were produced.

As of January 1, 2009, almost all employees of Auto 5000 GmbH were taken over by Volkswagen AG, thus ending the project.
