The SAIC-Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. , formerly Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. (abbreviated SVW , Chinese  上汽 大众 汽车 ) is an automobile manufacturer based in Anting , Shanghai , which was initially founded in 1984 as an independent company by SAIC Motor . In 1988 the company developed into an official joint venture with the two companies Volkswagen AG and Volkswagen (China) Investment . The company manufactures vehicles of the Volkswagen and Škoda brands .

Company development and model development

The company's production began in 1984 with the Volkswagen Santana , which was initially imported as a CKD kit for assembly. The model was available both as a notchback and in the estate version, which is more popular with the police and authorities. Own production began about a year after the model was launched on the Chinese market. With more than 3,000,000 units produced and a number of model updates, the Santana has developed into one of the most popular car models in the People's Republic of China , and a successor model is now in production. It was not until 1996 that Volkswagen tried to take the first step to replace the outdated model with the Volkswagen Passat . However, due to the lower price and a much more extensive range of special equipment, the Passat could not survive and remained on offer as a parallel model.

In the new millennium, the Volkswagen Polo should then increase sales, especially in urban areas that have major traffic problems. But due to its high price for China, it initially “flopped”. The facelift version, however, brought the hoped-for success, which was mainly due to the new sports models such as the CrossPolo and the Polo Sporty. Last but not least, these replaced the Volkswagen Gol , which was popular up to that time and existed from 2002 to 2007. In November 2006 the Škoda Octavia was presented. It went into production in March 2007. From around 2008 there was the Volkswagen Passat Lingyu , which is supposed to win over the upper class as potential customers. But the Volkswagen Touran has also been very successful in China since then. The small Škoda Fabia , which is more of a competitor to the Mini , is less popular . The two notchback models Volkswagen Lavida and Volkswagen Passat Variant , which are intended to close the gap between the Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Sagitar models manufactured by FAW-Volkswagen , are also reserved for the Chinese market . Until the appearance of the Volkswagen Teramont, the only VW SUV from China was the Volkswagen Tiguan , which is produced here in a long version. Another innovation for China is the generation change of the Polo, the Sporty version of which will be replaced at the turn of the year. The notchback Jingqu should follow in the summer of next year.

Formation of a new company division for electric car construction with its own brand

The electric car models that SAIC Volkswagen intends to produce in the future as part of its activities are to appear under its own brand called Tantos . The Volkswagen Lavida blue-e-motion is to be one of the first models to appear under the new brand name. The new brand name is approved by the Chinese government.
