La Voiture Noire ( German for  "The Black Car" ) is a unique piece from the Volkswagen Group manufacturer Bugatti Automobiles , which was presented as a concept vehicle in March 2019 at the Geneva Motor Show . The model name refers to a lost pre-war classic from Bugatti . With a net purchase price of eleven million euros, La Voiture Noire is the most expensive new car ever built in 2019. A mobile version is due to be completed in 2021.

History of origin

Bugatti Automobiles, which was founded by Volkswagen in 1998 and, according to its own understanding, is in the tradition of the Bugatti sports car manufacturer , has been producing high-performance sports cars in small series since 2005. The Veyron 16.4 was followed by the Chiron , of which a total of 500 vehicles have been produced in Molsheim, Alsace since 2016 . In order to maintain interest in the brand during the long production phases of the very expensive vehicles, Bugatti regularly presents individual vehicles (“one-off build”) and special models that are technically and stylistically modifications of the respective series vehicles and are sometimes assigned to specific occasions. The unique La Voiture Noire was created to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Bugatti brand in 1909.

The manufacturer sees La Voiture Noire as a homage to the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic , which was manufactured from 1936 and , with its riveted body designed by Jean Bugatti , is one of the brand's best-known sports cars and one of the “most unusual old-timers ”. Four of the "Atlantic" were made. Three of them were customer vehicles; the fourth car was used privately by Jean Bugatti at the time and has been lost since the attempt to protect it from access by the German occupying forces during the Second World War . Originally painted black, this car known as La Voiture Noire is one of the myths of the Bugatti brand. He is still being searched for. Experts estimate its market value - in the event that it is found - at 100 million euros.

La Voiture Noire from 2019 should follow up on this example . The car was presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019 . The vehicle, which was made maneuverable by means of electric motors, had neither the final drive train nor a designed interior at that time. While it was built in 12 weeks, the final vehicle is expected to be ready in 2021.

The car body is stylistically independent. It was designed by the German Bugatti design chief Achim Anscheidt and his French deputy, Étienne Salomé . The structure is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic , is not painted in color and therefore appears black. The manufacturer speaks of visible carbon. A fin runs centrally from the front of the vehicle to the rear, picking up on a characteristic design feature of the Bugatti T57 Atlantic. In the pre-war vehicle, the left and right halves of the body were riveted together using upright flanges . In the new edition of La Voiture Noire , however, this element has no function; the vertical rest position of the windscreen wiper is at the same width. La Voiture Noire has a strongly protruding vehicle nose that merges into a pronounced radiator opening. Like the radiator on the pre-war Bugattis, it has the shape of a horseshoe. The design of the front section takes up templates from the Bugatti Divo presented in 2018 . The rear section also stands out from the Chiron. It is characterized by a curved, horizontally running strip of lights that has been moved up further to improve the dissipation of engine heat. At the lower end are the six tailpipes of the exhaust system. The wheels have spokes that overlap in several levels, they were created using the 3D printing process and their structure is still to be revised for the finished vehicle.

In May 2019, the vehicle won the audience-decided “Concorso d'Eleganza Design Award For Concept Cars & Prototypes” at the event of the same name in Villa d'Este on Lake Como , Italy.

technology

When completed, La Voiture Noire should be technically based on the Bugatti Chiron . It will be powered by the 16-cylinder W engine also used in the Chiron , which has a displacement of 7993 cc and a maximum of 1103 kW (1500 hp). The engine is installed in the center of the vehicle . The car will have four-wheel drive . The power will be transmitted by an automatic dual clutch transmission with seven forward gears.

Whereabouts and reception

With a purchase price of eleven million euros before taxes, the vehicle is the most expensive new car ever made. After the exhibition in Geneva it was reported across Europe that the Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo had bought La Voiture Noire . The former Volkswagen Group boss Ferdinand Piëch was also associated with the vehicle in the press. However, Bugatti boss Stephan Winkelmann denied the reports with some time lag.

The fact that the identical name alone creates an arbitrary reference between the unique item from 2019 and the classic Bugatti from the pre-war period has not gone without criticism. Paolo Tumminelli , professor of design concepts at the Technical University of Cologne , accuses Bugatti of making a fool of a legend.

“[...] The more obscene the property and the more absurd the price, the better the sales prospects. [...] If you just refer to the name of the most expensive used car in the world, you are driving the legend. Jean Bugatti would turn in the ditch if he knew about it. [...] A fifth, new "Atlantic" is nothing more than a mega souvenir. "
