Life

The son of a schoolmaster from a miner's family was enrolled at the University of Leipzig in the winter semester of 1688/1689 . He worked as a singer in various court orchestras, and finally the electoral chapel in Dresden. There he switched to the Kreuzschule as a teacher at the end of 1697, where he soon also took on church music tasks. As an excellent singer, he often sang the solo parts in church music performances.

Due to the illness of his predecessor Basilius Petritz , Grundig took over the office of cantor in 1713. He turned out to be a skilled singing teacher. His students included Christoph Gottlieb Schröter , Johann Gottlieb Graun and his younger brother, the composer and famous singer Carl Heinrich Graun .

By copying Heinrich Schütz 's passions, Grundig made great contributions to the preservation of these important clay monuments. However, his own compositions have not been passed down.

Grundig's successor as Kreuzkantor was the composer Theodor Christlieb Reinhold .

The Protestant theologian, mineralogist and publicist Christoph Gottlob Grundig was his nephew.
