Christian Theodor Weinlig

Christian Theodor Weinlig (born July 25, 1780 in Dresden ; † March 7, 1842 in Leipzig ) was a German lawyer, music teacher , composer and choir conductor in Dresden and Leipzig.

Weinlig's parents were the Dresden lawyer Christian Heinrich Weinlig (1741–1804) and Friederike Wilhelmine Weinlig, b. Hertel (1754-1807). Grandfather Christian Weinlig (1681–1762) was a lawyer, General-Accis-Inspector, city councilor, city architect and mayor in Dresden.

Weinlig studied law at the University of Leipzig from 1797 to 1803 and worked as a lawyer in Dresden from 1803 . He received his musical training from his uncle Christian Ehregott Weinlig , who was cantor at the Dresden Kreuzkirche, and from Stanislao Mattei in Bologna . There Christian Theodor Weinlig was a member of the Accademia Filarmonica .

From 1814 to 1817 Weinlig initially worked as Kreuzkantor in Dresden, in 1823 he became Thomaskantor in Leipzig. He held this office until his death. Christian Theodor Weinlig was with Charlotte Emilie Treitschke (1787–1873), the daughter of the lawyer Dr. Karl Friedrich Treitschke (1746–1804) married and had five children.

The pianist Clara Schumann née was one of Weinlig's best-known students . Wieck and the composer and conductor Richard Wagner . He also dedicated his first work to him (piano sonata in B flat major). Richard Wagner dedicated his choral work “ The Love Supper of the Apostles ” in F major WWV 694 to his wife. One of his children, the doctor and publicist Albert Christian Weinlig , later became Saxon Minister of the Interior. Weinlig was buried in the old Johannisfriedhof in Leipzig (5th department, on the east wall, south of the main path). His grave tablet is still preserved.

After his death, his work Theoretical-Practical Guide to Fugue (Dresden 1845) was published.

In 1900 a street in the Leipzig district of Gohlis was named after CT Weinlig (Weinligstraße).
