Sebaldus Baumann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sebaldus Baumann (* around 1515 in Nuremberg ; † after 1588) was Kreuzkantor in Dresden from 1540 to 1553 .

Baumann, who came from a respected family of craftsmen from Nuremberg, studied in Wittenberg from the winter semester of 1537 . In 1540, on the recommendation of Melanchthon, he was appointed the first cantor at the school of the Dresden Kreuzkirche , and in 1551 he became a citizen of the city of Dresden.

From his tenure in office it is known that Baumann had differences with the town piper Jakob - probably because of the income from performances at weddings. Baumann also had financial problems. When the city council confronted him about debts in 1553, he let his anger run wild and was imprisoned for three days.

He was dismissed for neglecting his official duties, but apparently soon found a job as a tenor at the electoral chapel. In 1557 he was again required to repay debts of one hundred guilders. It is likely that he was arrested for insolvency and lost his job as a result.

He later became the host of the Zum Güldenen Löwen inn . In this capacity, he was mentioned for the last time in 1588 in the files of the City Council Archives.

Masses , motets and a magnificat have come down to us from Baumann's compositions .
