Friedrich Oskar Wermann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Oskar Wermann (born April 30, 1840 in Neichen ; † November 22, 1906 in Dresden ) was a German composer and from 1876 to 1906 Kreuzkantor in Dresden.

Life

Wermann was born on April 30, 1840 in Neichen near Trebsen as the ninth child of the married couple Johann Wilhelm Wermann, village school teacher and cantor, and Johanna Rosina Wermann. After his training at the teachers' seminar in Grimma , he first worked as a teacher in smaller towns near Leipzig and in Dresden. During this time he studied music in Dresden with Karl Kuchten , Gustav Adolf Merkel , Ernst Julius Otto and Friedrich Wieck and from 1864 to 1866 at the Leipzig Conservatory with Moritz Hauptmann , Ignaz Moscheles , Carl Reinecke and Ernst Friedrich Richter . He then worked for two years as a music teacher and organist in Wesserling . In 1868 he became senior teacher for music at the royal teachers' college in Dresden-Friedrichstadt . He was also an organist at the Reformed Church there.

After his election on November 4, 1875 as the successor to Ernst Julius Otto in the office of Kreuzkantor, he became music director of the three main churches in Dresden on January 1, 1876, namely the Kreuz- , the Frauen- and the Sophienkirche . In 1883 Wermann was appointed professor. On June 16, 1884, the Dresden Teachers' Choir was founded as an all-male choir, which Wermann led as the first choir director in 1884 and from 1888 to 1893. In 1905 Wermann became royal councilor. Wermann retired in February 1906 and died after a trip to Italy on November 22, 1906 in Dresden in bitterness over a derogatory assessment of his work. His grave is in the Weißer Hirsch forest cemetery .

Oskar Wermann had an important influence on musical life in Dresden with his 30 years of work as Kreuzkantor. He introduced Franz Wüllner's choir exercises at the Munich Music School as well as theory and voice training lessons in the training of his choir and developed a cappella literature up to Richard Strauss as well as major oratorios . In 1886 he had the choir and the instrumentation enlarged by incorporating the trade house orchestra and the court orchestra . On Good Friday 1879, he conducted the Dresden premiere of the Johannes Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach and thus ensured a Bach renaissance in Dresden.

Wermann's compositional work is stylistically influenced primarily by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann , as well as by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger in polyphony , which can be seen in his organ sonatas in particular.

Honoring the 175th birthday in 2015

Oskar Wermann's birthplace honored the important Neichener on his 175th birthday with a varied festive day: An exhibition about the jubilee was on view in the rectory, and Mühlgasse was renamed Oskar-Wermann-Gasse. A commemorative plaque was unveiled on the site of the former home of Oskar Wermann's parents, which no longer exists, where he grew up with his eight siblings. After the Kreuzkantor and his work had been honored with a musical ceremony in the fully occupied church in Neichen, a memorial stone was finally unveiled in front of the church with a speech by District Administrator Gerhard Gey .
