Gerhard Gey

Gerhard Gey (* 1950 in Grimma ) is a German politician ( CDU ). He was 25 years district in Saxony, most recently until July 31, 2015 District Administrator of the district Leipzig .

Life and work

After graduating from the extended high school "Ernst Schneller" (today: Gymnasium St. Augustin ) in Grimma and completing basic military service with the NVA , Gey completed a degree in animal production from 1971 at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig .

This was followed from 1975 on a research study of population genetics , which Gey completed with a doctorate A in 1979 - the dissertation is entitled "Investigations on the extrapolation of partial lactation performance in different genotypic groups of dairy cattle taking into account the influence of systematic environmental factors" . He then worked as a research assistant and development engineer in various research and development facilities in the GDR.

Gey and his wife Inge are at home in Grimma, the couple have two grown daughters.

Political career

During the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR , Gey came to politics as a lateral entrant and in 1989 he joined the civil rights movement Neues Forum . In May 1990 the district council elected him to the district administrator of the district of Grimma , and in the same year he became a member of the Saxon CDU . During the district reform of Saxony in 1994/1996 , “his” district merged with the Wurzen district to form the Muldental district , of which he was the only district administrator from 1994 to 2008 (re-election 2001).

During the district reform of Saxony in 2008 , in which the districts of Muldentalkreis and Leipziger Land merged, Gey again ran as district administrator for the newly created district of Leipzig. He won the runoff election on June 22, 2008 with 57.0% of the votes against his previous colleague Petra Köpping (SPD). With 25 years in office, Gey became one of the longest serving district administrators in the Free State of Saxony .

After meeting a group of right-wing youths on July 24, 2007, there was a supraregional reception about Geys person. Gey agreed to a conversation that this group had been looking for in his function as district administrator, which led to criticism in the left-wing press.

In mid-January, Gey publicly announced that he would not stand for election as district administrator on June 7, 2015 and that he would resign from his political office on July 31, 2015. Henry Graichen was elected Geys successor as district administrator on June 7, 2015 .

Gey is President of the Geopark Porphyrland Association. Steinreich in Sachsen eV and vice-president of the sports club SV 1919 Grimma eV
