Landscape protection areas were the Hohburg Mountains , the Dahlener Heide , the Wermsdorf Forest , Machern-Lübschütz, Großsteinberg and the Muldental between Wurzen and Eilenburg. The Polenzwald near Brandis and the Reichenbacher Berg east of Wurzen were protected. On the Kohlenberg (179 m) south of Brandis, ski jumps offered winter sports enthusiasts training opportunities. Hikers could also be trained as mountaineers in a climbing school.

Economy and Transport

Despite the proximity to Leipzig , the economy in the district was mainly characterized by agriculture. In animal production, more than two thirds were dominated by cattle and pigs. Permanent grassland was widespread in the Muldenaue north of Wurzen. On the soils of medium quality east of the Mulde mainly grain and forage crops as well as potatoes were grown, west of the Mulde the forage crops predominated. The district town was the industrial center of the district. The VEB Nahrungsmittel combine  " Albert Kuntz ", a large mill and baked goods company, as well as VEBs from the textile industry, machine and vehicle construction and the construction industry determined this medium-sized industrial location. Wurzen was on the F 6 from Leipzig to Dresden and was an express train station on the main Leipzig – Dresden railway line.
