history
The history of Nischwitz goes back to the Middle Ages . A mention already recorded in the 11th century in the Neue Sächsische Kirchengalerie describes a manor in today's Nischwitz .
In 1412 the name Nitzcuwitz is mentioned for the first time, which can also be read as Nitzewitz in 1439 . In 1450, when the von Nischwitz family acquired the manor, it was given its current name, which has been documented since 1875.
Baron von Rackwitz , royal Saxon chamber master , arranged for the new Nischwitz Castle to be rebuilt from 1714 to 1721 after the old building had completely fallen into disrepair, with the corresponding annexes, parks, etc. During this period, the village church was also rebuilt and expanded. The estate and with it the location changed hands several times over the years.
Finally in 1743 Heinrich Graf von Brühl bought the estate. His lavish building mania it owes Castle Nischwitz that the known beyond the borders of Saxony addition architect Johann Christoph Knöffel could begin a renewed, very extensive renovation and expansion of the entire castle. One of the most beautiful and magnificent rococo castles in Saxony was created.
Nischwitz, which then had 1,141 inhabitants, belonged to the town of Wurzen from July 1, 1950 to December 31, 1956 . The independence that was regained afterwards ended in 1993 with the incorporation into Thallwitz.
