About this picture

The Borna district was a district in the Leipzig district of the GDR . From 1990 to 1994 it existed as the Borna district in Saxony . His area is now in the district of Leipzig in Saxony. The seat of the district administration was in Borna .

geography

location

The Borna district was south of Leipzig .

Neighboring areas

The Borna district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the Leipzig-Land , Grimma , Geithain , Altenburg , Zeitz and Hohenmölsen districts .

Natural space

The district was in the south of the Leipzig lowland bay . The Weißenfels-Borna loess plain formed slightly undulating plateaus at a height of 160 to 180 m. In the east, sandy soils were widespread, on which the mixed pine forests of the Großer Fürstenholz grew. White Elster , Pleiße and Wyhra flowed through the loess plain from south to north in about one kilometer wide floodplains. The lowest point of the circle was in the Pleißetal at 125 m. As a result of the widespread lignite mining , the natural landscape was largely destroyed. The rivers were diverted over long distances.

history

1874 Saxony were part of a comprehensive administrative reform in the Kingdom of new district governor teams and Amtshauptmann teams established. The Borna District Authority was renamed the Borna District at the beginning of 1939 . After 1945 it belonged to the state of Saxony and thus to the GDR since 1949 . The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states in the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the five remaining states of the GDR . On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles, whereby there were also changes of area beyond the borders of the former five countries. The Borna district was assigned to the Leipzig district and the town of Borna became the seat of the district .
The Borna district gave 30 of its 84 municipalities to the newly formed Geithain district . The remaining part of the district was expanded to include 8 communities from what was then the district of Leipzig .

economy

The economy was determined by open-cast lignite mining and coal refining operations. Coal has been mined in the Borna mining district since 1800 . At the beginning of the twenties one went over to the large opencast mining; Large power plants (Böhlen 1926) and chemical companies (Großschwelerei and gasoline works Böhlen 1935/36) followed. The most important industrial companies are the VEB Petroleum Combine "Otto Grotewohl" in Bohlen, the VEB Braunkohlenkombinat Espenhain and the VEB Braunkohlenkombinat Borna. As a result of open-cast lignite mining, the agricultural area and thus the importance of agriculture has decreased significantly. Other important companies in the district were

  • VEB Groitzscher Rohpappenfabrik
  • VEB Bella shoe factory Groitzsch
  • VEB Elektrotechnische Werkstätte Rötha
  • VEB Baustoffwerke Borna

traffic

The Berlin Ring – Hirschberg motorway ran through the district. The F 2 from Leipzig via Pegau and Groitzsch to Schleiz , the F 93 from Borna to Zwickau , the F 95 from Leipzig via Borna and Karl-Marx-Stadt to Kurort Oberwiesenthal and the F 176 from Pegau via Borna also served national road traffic Chub .

The railway lines Leipzig – Böhlen – Altenburg , Böhlen – Espenhain , Neukieritzsch – Borna – Chemnitz , Neukieritzsch – Pegau and Leipzig – Pegau – Gera ran through the Borna district .

License Plate

Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the letter pairs SC and SD from around 1974 to the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was SW 70-01 to SW 85-00 .

At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinctive sign BNA . It was issued until July 31, 1994. Due to the license plate liberalization , it has been available in the Leipzig district since November 9, 2012 .
