geography
location
The circle stretched on both sides of the north-flowing hollow. In the south of the district the "valley of castles" began with the castles in Colditz, Rochlitz, Wechselburg, Rochsburg, Penig and Waldenburg.
Neighboring areas
The Grimma district bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the Wurzen , Oschatz , Döbeln , Rochlitz , Geithain , Borna and Leipzig-Land districts .
Natural space
The land on the middle Mulde was in the Central Saxon mountain and hill country . The flat undulating landscape rose gradually from 150 m in the north to 200 m in the south. At Sermuth, north of Colditz, Freiberger and the Zwickauer Mulde united . On loamy sandy soils and sandy loess soils, where the proportion of sand was low, agriculture was practiced; In the southern district, coniferous forests of the Glasten and Colditz forests and the Thümmlitzwald predominated.
In the Mutzschen area, the district reached into the loess plate of the Lommatzscher care, which is strongly structured by small valleys and dents . Here the land was free of forests. In the northern district of the Grimma hill country, forested knolls towered over the sandy loess soil, such as the Linden-Berg (207 m) west of Grimma. Quarries and gravel pits provided building materials. The stones that were used to build the Pleißenburg in Leipzig came from the Großsteinberg . From Beuchaer granite was Völkerschlachtdenkmal in Leipzig built. The nature reserves Naunhofer Forst, Großsteinberg-Ammelshain and Colditzer Forst are in the district area.
history
As early as 1874, the Grimma Authority had been set up in the Kingdom of Saxony and was renamed the Grimma District in 1939. The district of Grimma belonged to the state of Saxony after 1945 and thus to the GDR since 1949 . The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states in the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the five remaining states of the GDR. On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles, whereby there were also changes of area beyond the borders of the former 5 countries. The Grimma district was assigned to the Leipzig district , the city of Grimma became the seat of the district.

The external structure was retained until the first district reform in Saxony. During this district reform , the district was added to the Muldental district on August 1, 1994 .
Economy and Transport
Industrial companies in the consumer goods, metalworking and basic industries were located in the cities. This included factories for chemical plants, electrical switchgear, paper, leather and woven goods as well as outerwear in Grimma, the paint industry in Nerchau, the ceramics industry ( VEB Vereinigte Porzellanwerke, VEB Silikatwerk Brandis) in Colditz and the VEBs pulp and paper mills, electrical appliances, grain industry and chippings in Trebsen . In agriculture, wheat, sugar beet and fodder crops predominated on the more productive loess soils in the east, while rye and potatoes were grown in the west of the district. The first horticultural production cooperative (GPG) in the Leipzig district was founded in 1958 in Dürrweitzschen. The cooperative fruit production department was one of the four closed fruit-growing areas in the GDR. The Naunhofer Forest and the lakes created by gravel mining were local recreation areas for nearby Leipzig .
The district of Grimma was conveniently located. In the north the Leipzig – Dresden motorway ran, in the south near Colditz the F 176 touched the circle for about five kilometers. Großbothen, located in the middle of the district, was the junction of the Borsdorf – Döbeln – Coswig and Großbothen – Glauchau railway lines .
