The Lommatzscher Pflege is a hilly landscape in central Saxony .

location

It is located on the left side of the Elbe Valley, northwest of the city of Meißen and south of Riesa . To the east, on the other side of the Elbe, the Großenhainer Pflege follows . To the south is the Meissen highlands . To the west it extends to Oschatz , Mügeln and Ostrau , where it merges into the Oschatz hill country . To the northwest, beyond the Döllnitz valley, is the Dahlener Heide . In addition to the Döllnitz, the Elbe also forms the natural border of the landscape in the north, which merges there into the Röderaue. The most important bodies of water are the Jahna and the Ketzerbach .

The center of the landscape is the eponymous small town of Lommatzsch , which is also the only larger town and used to be one of the centers of the Saxon grain trade. Characteristic for the Lommatzscher care is a multitude of the smallest localities, which often only consist of a few three and four-sided farms. Settlement can be traced back to the 8th century, when the area was part of the Gaus of the Elbe Slavic Daleminzier .

meaning

Because of their loess soils of the best quality and high soil quality, agricultural use traditionally dominates in the Lommatzsch care. Therefore it was also called the granary of Saxony . There are also clay and kaolin deposits . They formed the basis for a very diverse clay and stoneware production , particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, in Strehla, Mügeln, Meißen and other places in the region. The landscape is very poorly forested due to the widespread agricultural use.
