Thomas Westphalen

Thomas Westphalen (born September 16, 1957 ) is a German medieval archaeologist in Dresden .

Westphalen did his doctorate in 1994 under Barbara Scholkmann at the University of Tübingen with the evaluation of a city center excavation in Ulm . He is head of “Department II - Archaeological Monument Preservation” at the State Office for Archeology (LfA) in Saxony and is also responsible for urban archeology in Bautzen , Dresden, Görlitz , Leipzig , Meißen , Pirna and Zittau . At the same time, Westphalen is one of the three Saxon representatives in the Association of State Archaeologists . From September 14, 2006 to the end of April 2009, he was acting head of office together with Ministerialrat Rainer Büchsenstein, Commercial Director of the LfA, after Judith Oexle's predecessor resigned in 2006. In this role, Westphalen was editor of the Archaeonaut issues 6 to 8 : Issues on archaeological cultural monuments in Saxony . Since May 1st, 2009 Regina Smolnik has been a state archaeologist for the Free State of Saxony. Westphalen is chairman of the Archaeological Society of Saxony e. V. (AGiS) and since 2018 chairman of the Saxon Homeland Security Association .
