The Wermsdorfer Wald nature reserve joined to the west .

history

1874 was in the Kingdom of Saxony the Amtshauptmannschaft Oschatz been established that in 1939 the district Oschatz has been renamed. The district of Oschatz belonged to the state of Saxony after 1945 and thus to the GDR since 1949.

The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states of the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the GDR and the five remaining states. On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles. The district of Oschatz was assigned to the district of Leipzig , the city of Oschatz became the seat of the district .

economy

In the agricultural district of Oschatz there was industry only in the district town and in Mügeln. The industry that arose in Oschatz at the end of the 19th century produced scales, children's clothing, slippers, felt goods, stoves and gas appliances, building materials and sugar. VEB Glasseidenwerk mainly produced kaolin , clay and quartz sand from local raw materials . This only plant of its kind in the GDR was built in 1959. Southwest of Mügeln, the largest kaolin deposit in the GDR was mined near Kemlitz. The VEB ceramic and brick works in Mügeln manufactured stove tiles and bricks. In addition, chemical products, machines and artist paints were produced in Mügeln. Agriculture mainly produces potatoes, rye and forage crops on the sandy soils in the Dahlen area. Wheat and sugar beets are grown in the loess area of Oschatzer Pflege and Mügelner Ländchen. Fruit growing to the southwest of Mügeln had increased significantly since 1950. Forestry was also important. About a fifth of the district area was taken up by the Reudnitz, Wermsdorf and Hubertusburg forests.

Important companies in the district were among others:

  • VEB Waagenfabrik Oschatz
  • VEB Elektrobau Oschatz
  • VEB children's clothing factory Oschatz
  • VEB artificial stone and concrete works Oschatz
  • VEB Löwenbrauerei Dahlen
  • VEB Maschinenfabrik Mügeln
  • VEB chemical plant Mügeln
