Paul Schmidhalter (born January 12, 1931 in Brig , † August 23, 2005 in Montana ; resident in Brig-Glis ) was a Swiss politician ( CVP ). In 1992/93 he was President of the National Council .

biography

After graduating from high school, he studied engineering at the ETH Zurich . In 1967 he founded his own company.

Schmidhalter began his political career in 1972 when he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Valais . He held this office for twelve years and was considered rebellious, dynamic and rowdy. In part, he opposed his own party. In 1981 he ran in the Valais State Council elections with a Social Democrat on a joint list. The result was extremely close, but Schmidhalter was not chosen.

On November 28, 1983 Schmidhalter was elected to the National Council, where he politicized a little more calmly. He was particularly committed to the Alpine rail tunnels and the opening of the canton of Valais. In 1992/93 he was President of the National Council . On December 3, 1995, he announced his resignation from parliament, but he continued to pursue his concerns.

Schmidhalter died of cancer at the age of 74 . He was married and had three children.
