geography
The Zeitz district lay on both sides of the White Elster between Leipzig and Gera . It bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Hohenmölsen , Borna , Altenburg , Schmölln , Gera-Land , Eisenberg and Naumburg .
history
A district of Zeitz had existed in the Prussian province of Saxony since 1815 , which had belonged to the state of Saxony-Anhalt since 1945 and thus to the GDR since 1949. On July 25, 1952, there was a comprehensive district reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states were dissolved and replaced by districts .
The Zeitz district gave parts of its territory to the new Hohenmölsen , Naumburg , Eisenberg and Altenburg districts . The Zeitz district was formed from the remaining part of the district and assigned to the newly formed Halle district .
On January 1, 1956, the municipality of Bröckau was re-incorporated into the Zeitz district, without the Braunshain district, from the Schmölln district ( Leipzig district ), to which it had belonged until 1950. On January 1, 1957, the Goldschau community was reclassified from the Naumburg district to the Zeitz district.
On May 17, 1990, the district was renamed the Zeitz district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony-Anhalt in October 1990 . During the first district reform in Saxony-Anhalt , it was absorbed into the Burgenland district on July 1, 1994 .
