history

The first recorded form of place names dates from 1405 as Polentzk . During the Thirty Years' War the village was almost completely destroyed by Croats and the Holk Corps, and in 1813 it was plundered by troops from the Battle of Leipzig . The so-called “Polenzer Holzkrieg” also took place during this period: the years 1805-07 were long and cold winters. Since Polenz had larger forests, the Brandis invaded the Polenzer woods and stole firewood.

In 1821 August Schumann named in the State, Post and Newspaper Lexicon of Saxony Polenz concerning a. a .:

“Since there were two different manors under the names Ober- and Nieder-Polenz in earlier times in Polenz, both names are still common in relation to the village, although this only forms a community, a church tour and only belongs to a manor . One understands now under Ober-Polenz the manorial. Sheep farm, parish, school, church, together with the higher part of the village that adjoins it; but under Nieder-Polenz the manor buildings, stables, barns and the rest of the village. [...] There is also a windmill here. [...] The local manor has been in the uninterrupted possession of the noble von Lindenau family for several centuries , [...] "

The volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1873 , as there was a major fire in the previous year, in which even the church tower was on fire.

On June 1, 1992, Polenz was incorporated into Brandis.

Polenz Church

The church in Poland was built in its current form in 1722 and 1725. The foundation stone was laid on June 22nd, 1722, the inauguration took place on August 21st, 1725. There is no evidence of a previous building that is said to have stood in the same place. The construction probably came from 1440. The construction costs amounted to 2400 thalers. In 1878 the interior of the church was completely redesigned according to plans by the master builder Altendorff from Leipzig, the costs for this amounted to 8,030 marks. In 1883 a third, middle bell was donated to the two-part bell.

Polenz has been part of the Brandis parish since 1978. In 1970 the church tower was shortened (forced because of undesirable proximity to the military airport of the Soviet Army) and has lost its impressive shape to this day.
