Gustav Adolf Merkel

Gustav Adolf Merkel (born November 12, 1827 in Oberoderwitz , Oberlausitz , † October 30, 1885 in Dresden ) was a German organist , composer and music teacher. His organ compositions were among the most frequently performed works in the second half of the 19th century.

Life

As the son of a teacher and organist, Merkel received lessons in counterpoint and organ playing from Ernst Julius Otto and Johann Schneider . For a few years he taught at the Dresden School and in 1858 became organist at the Dresden orphanage church and in 1860 at the Kreuzkirche . In 1864 he became court organist at the Catholic Court Church in Dresden. From 1861 he was a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music . From 1867 to 1873 he was the conductor of the Dreyssig Singing Academy .

Merkel made a name for himself as a virtuoso organist and composer for organ music . Among other things, he was the teacher of the Dresden choir director and composer Hugo Richard Jüngst . On December 12th, 1857 he (like Anton Dreyssig earlier ) was accepted into the lodge association " Zum golden Apfel ". In March 1866 he became Master of the Chair .
