Valentin Otto

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Valentin Otto (* 1529 in Markkleeberg ; † April 1594 ) was a German musician and Leipzig Thomaskantor .

Otto studied in Leipzig until 1548. 1553 / 54–1564 he was cantor of the Wenceslas Church in Naumburg . In 1564 he became Thomaskantor, a position he held for 30 years until 1594. This makes Otto the Thomaskantor with the longest term in office. The important organist at the St. Thomas Church Elias Nikolaus Ammerbach worked almost at the same time as Otto. Otto's son Valerius Otto (1579 – after 1612) was an organist and composer.

Individual evidence

  1. Eitner (1902) writes "Cleberg (after Stallbaum, perhaps today's Kleeberg, but according to Ritter there are five places)". Werner (1926) adds "Markkleeberg near Leipzig 2 [...] 2 ) Eitner is to be corrected and supplemented."
