Sebastian Knüpfer , also Knüpffer , (baptized on September 6, 1633 in Asch ; † October 10, 1676 in Leipzig ) was a German composer and church musician .

Life

The son of the Ascher cantor and organist Johann Knüpfer received his first training from his father. It is said that when he was ten years old he was organist in his home town. From 1646 to 1654 he attended high school in Regensburg , where Ephorus Balthasar Balduin, the son of Friedrich Balduin , became one of his most important teachers there . Later he went to Leipzig, where he studied philosophy under Johann Adam Scherzer . Here in 1657, with the support of Johann Philippi, he succeeded Tobias Michael in the office of Thomaskantor at the Thomas School . A circle of respected musicians formed around Knüpfer (including the Nikolaikantor Elias Nathusius , the Thomas organists Gerhard Preisensin and Jakob Weckmann, and the doctor Johann Kaspar Horn ), who earned Leipzig the reputation of an important music center. In the laudation on the death of Knüpfers it was said: "The election of Knüpfers was a healing for Leipzig's musical life and a blessing for the Thomaskantorat." In addition to his musical activities, he also made a name for himself as a philologist. In 1658 he married Maria Sabina Hagen, with whom he had three sons and two daughters.

A square in Asch was named after him in 1925.

Most of Knüpfer's works were never printed. He wrote motets , sacred concerts , cantatas and masses . He composed for Leopold I's coronation as Emperor in 1658 and for the Peace of Aachen in 1668. In 1663 a collection of madrigals and canzonets appeared in print.

At the beginning of the 21st century there are some CD recordings with works by Knüpfers, for example with the Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble under the direction of Arno Paduch (selection of "sacred concerts") and with the King's Consort (selection of "sacred works").
