Jacob Weckmann

Jacob Weckmann (* around 1650, presumably in Dresden ; † October 19, 1680 in Leipzig ) was a German organist and composer .

Life

Jacob Weckmann was born as the son of the musician Matthias Weckmann . From July 1672 until his death in 1680 he worked as Thomas organist at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Works

Only a few works by Jacob Weckman have survived in handwriting, the attribution of which is probable but not certain. Editions of these works are not yet available.

Formerly attributed works

  • When the Lord will redeem the captives of Zion (Psalm 126) . This sacred concert is now considered the work of Matthias Weckmann.

Jacob Weckmann can hardly have been born before 1648: The first marriage of his parents was concluded in Lübeck in 1648, and there are no reasons to assume an illegitimate birth long before this marriage. Jacob Weckmann's acceptance of the position as Thomas organist in July 1672 again requires a certain minimum age, and he will hardly have been born after around 1652. See Ortgies 2016, p. 393.
