Psalm 84

Synagogue (Châlons-en-Champagne) , on the facade in Hebrew a verse from Psalm 84: "How adorable is your dwelling, Lord of hosts!"

The 84th psalm (according to Greek counting the 83rd) is a psalm of Korach and is to be classified in the series of hymns or, more precisely, the songs of Zion.

genus

Hermann Gunkel places the psalm in the series of the songs of Zion. Zion's songs are of the nature of a hymn that praises God in particular and his sanctuary and begins immediately with this praise - without introductory words. Instead of an introduction, this psalm contains a rhetorical question from the main part of the hymn. Also, as in verse 12, YHWH is often the subject.

structure

The psalm can be broken down as follows:

  • Verse 1: heading
  • Verses 2-4: Praise to Zion
  • Verses 5-8: Blessing
  • Verses 9-10: Please
  • Verse 11: Confession
  • Verse 12f .: Praise the YHWH

use

Settings of the German text "How lovely are your apartments" originate and a. by Heinrich Schütz ( Psalms of David , 1619, SWV 29), Johann Hermann Schein , Johann Rosenmüller , Georg Philipp Telemann (opening chorus from the cantata for the 1st Sunday after Epiphany TVWV 1: 1628/1, 1744), Christoph Stoltzenberg , Friedrich Kiel , Gustav Adolf Merkel and Josef Rheinberger (op.35, 1865). Johannes Brahms used verses two, three and five in the fourth movement How lovely are your apartments, Herr Zebaoth of his German Requiem (op. 45, 1868).

Matthias Jorissen copied the psalm for the Geneva Psalter in 1798 : How lovely, Mr. Zebaoth, is your apartment, oh my God ( EG 282).
