Psalm 95

The 95th psalm (according to Greek counting the 94th) is a psalm from the fourth book of psalms . It belongs to the genre of the "prophetic liturgy".

The psalm is divided into two large parts, the first part belonging to the genre of " hymns ", while the second part contains an oracle .

structure

The Old Testament scholar Hermann Gunkel structured the psalm as follows:

  1. Verses 1–7d: Hymn of the church in honor of God
    1. Verses 1–5 sing about YHWH's greatness (with verse 1f. As an introduction)
    2. Verses 6–7d: jubilation (with verse 6 as introduction)
  2. Verses 7-11: divine oracle : admonition and threat
    1. Verse 7: Introduction
    2. Verses 8-10: Countering the example of the past

Dating

The psalm can be dated to the time after the return from the Babylonian captivity , since one can read from it that the church rose against the rule of God because of its miserable circumstances.
