The 143rd Psalm (according to Greek counting the 142nd) is a psalm of David from the fifth book of the Psalter . He is counted as the seventh and last in the group of the so-called penitential psalms .

Psalm 143 is the prayer of a person who is besieged by enemies and who turns to God in danger of death. He appeals to God's faithfulness and justice and keeps in mind how God saved his people in earlier times . In addition to the encouragement of God's grace, the person who prays also longs for direction for his life.

In the Catholic Liturgy of the Hours , Psalm 143 is part of Compline (night prayer) on Tuesday.

Based on the psalm, Cornelius Becker created the version of the Becker psalter, Herr, mein prayer hear in grace , which was set to music by Heinrich Schütz ( SWV 248 ).
