Psalm 75

The 75th Psalm (according to Greek counting the 74th) is a Psalm of David and belongs to the genre "prophetic liturgy".

structure

One possible structure of the psalm is as follows:

  1. Verse 2: Hymn of the church calling on God's name
  2. Verse 3f: God's own voice
  3. Verses 5–11: New beginning hymn by a single singer
    1. Verse 5f: Exhortation to YHWH's enemies
    2. Verse 7f: Exult over God's rule
    3. Verse 9: Positioning God's wrath cup in front of the enemy
    4. Verse 10f: Usual ending of a hymn

interpretation

The Old Testament scholar Hermann Gunkel sees the key message of the Psalm that the congregation hopes that YHWH will intervene despite the turmoil in the world.
