Psalm 42 in Prekmurian

The 42nd psalm is a psalm of the "sons of Korach". It finds its direct continuation in the 43rd Psalm . The psalm is at the beginning of the second book of the psalter.

classification

According to 2 Chr 20:19  Lut , the sons of Korach, to whom the psalm is ascribed in the 1st verse, are probably a family of temple singers. The psalm probably originally formed a coherent song together with psalm 43, as can be guessed from the continuous refrain.

Refrain

The psalm is marked by a refrain that appears for the first time in verse 6 and repeats itself in verse 12 and Ps. 43: 5.

theme

The singer of the Psalm is someone who is in an emergency and longs for God, but who is subject to other people's ridicule about it. He remembers going to the temple in Jerusalem and regrets that this pilgrimage is not possible for him now. Despite his suffering, the singer remains convinced that God will help him.

Literary implementation

The 42nd Psalm found a diverse literary echo in the spiritual poetry of the sixteenth century. Edits created u. a. Eobanus Hessus (1537) with Quemadmodum desiderat (Latin), Hans Gamersfelder As the deer screams for the brook (1542), Burchard Waldis Same as the deer calls for water (1553), Johann Fischart Like a deer calls for water (1576) , Johannes Geletzky Just as the deer rushes to the water (1566), Caspar Ulenberg How a deer screams girlich (1582), Philipp von Winnenberg (1538–1600) As the deer that is thirsty (1582), Philipp Nicolai So I wish have a good night now (1599).

Psalm songs and musical implementation

• Psalm 42 and 43 found a musical implementation in the hymn How the deer thirsts for fresh water by Dieter Trautwein . The song Harre, Meine Seele by Friedrichräder is inspired by the verse of the Psalm.
