Ambrosius Lobwasser
Ambrosius Lobwasser (born April 4, 1515 in Schneeberg , † November 27, 1585 in Königsberg ) was a humanistic German writer and translator .
Life
Lobwasser studied law in Leipzig and received his master's degree in 1535. He then stayed in France and Italy. Until 1550 he taught as a lecturer in Leipzig. From 1557 he lived as a princely councilor and chancellor in Meissen . From 1563 to 1585 he was professor of law in Königsberg.
From 1565 he worked on his translation of the Psalms , which appeared in 1573 under the title The Psalter of the royal prophet David . It was not based on the original Hebrew text and Martin Luther's translation , but on the French Psautier de Genève ( Geneva Psalter ) by Clément Marot and Théodore de Bèze , set to music by Guillaume Franc , Loys Bourgeois and Maistre Pierre ( Pierre Davantès ) . The work had over 100 editions and was used in German Reformed worship services until the 18th century. In Dresden it was included in the First Dresden Hymnbook in 1589, but after Christian I's death it was confiscated and replaced by a Lutheran hymnbook. Some of his poems also found their way into the Protestant hymnbook and the Catholic praise of God .
Psalm 118
Among the best-known songs by Lobwasser that are still sung today are two revised stanzas from his 14-stanza adaptation of Ps 118 EU Now say thanks and praise the gentlemen :
