Psalm 123
The 123rd Psalm (according to Greek counting the 122nd) is a psalm from the fifth book of the Psalms and belongs to the series of pilgrimage songs with influences from the genre of lamentations of an individual .
structure
The psalm could be structured in the following way:
- Verse 1f: part 1
- Verse 1: Beginning of the individual's prayer and description
- Verse 2: Representation of looking to God based on the relationship of the servant to the master
- Verse 3f: part 2
- Verse 3a: ask for mercy
- Verse 3bf: complaint against oppressors
Remarks
In the psalm there is a change from “I” (verse 1) to “we” (verses 2-4). This “I” can either be equated with the “we” or under the “I” one has to imagine a cantor.
Dating
Justus Olshausen generally dates the psalm to a time of need. Here one could think of the time of Syrian oppression or simply of the situation of a community in the midst of dispersion.
