The 32nd psalm (according to Greek counting the 31st) is a psalm of David . It belongs to the series of thanksgiving psalms for an individual. Motifs from wisdom poetry can also be found in it. The psalmist's earlier sin is the real issue. That is why the psalm belongs to the series of the seven penitential psalms .

structure

The Old Testament scholar Hermann Gunkel structured the psalm as follows:

  1. Verses 1-2: Confession to remission of guilt
  2. Verses 3–5: Narration: The psalmist remained in distress until the decision to confess (verse 6a) brought forgiveness
  3. Verses 6-7: Admonishing others to repent
  4. Verses 8–9: Wisdom speech: comparison of the unfinished business with stubborn beasts
  5. Verse 10: Summary of Experience
  6. Verse 11: exultation at the forgiveness of sins

Assignment to the penitential psalms

The psalm itself is not a penitential prayer in which a confession of sin is made. Instead, according to James Luther Mays, it is a psalm that teaches and instructs in the practice of repentance based on the psalmist's own experience.

Dating

Due to the influence of wisdom elements, Hermann Gunkel assumes a "relatively late origin".
