Psalm 49

The 49th psalm is a psalm of the sons of Korah . It is to be classified in the series of wisdom psalms.

structure

The psalm can be divided as follows:

  • Verses 2–5: The deeply moved poet has something to proclaim to mankind
  • Verses 6–20: His execution: On the fate of the rich and the uselessness of wealth
    • Verse 7 f .: Addressing his students
    • Verses 8-10: Earthly goods do not protect against death
    • Verse 11 f .: Death makes the rich poor
    • 13-16: The man who is looking forward to the gold, forgets that he also in the underworld must
    • Verse 17: Exhortation of the listeners
    • Verses 18-20: Summary

interpretation

The core message of the Psalm is not that prosperity is inherently bad, but that prosperity is put in place of God.
