The Ps 16 (according to the Greek count of 15) is a Ps of David and is usually in the genus belongs to the confidence Psalms.

In research, the psalm was assigned to 16 different genres:

  1. Trust Psalm (most common). This generic definition goes back to Hermann Gunkel . A psalm of trust, on the other hand, is an individual's lament .
  2. Supplication psalm
  3. Confession song
  4. Protection or asylum psalm
  5. Innocence song
  6. Dulderpsalm
  7. Royal psalm

The psalm can be broken down as follows:

  • Verse 1: frame
  • Verses 2–4: Confession of the prayer to YHWH and the pious as well as refusal to sacrifice to other gods
  • Verse 5f: Description of the relationship to YHWH on the basis of land issues
  • Verses 7–9: Description of the relationship: YHWH as master teacher
  • Verse 10f: frame
