Psalm 87

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 87th psalm (according to Greek counting the 86th) is a psalm of the sons of Korah and belongs to the series of hymns on Zion . The psalm creates difficulties for exegesis . Due to its irregular meter and unusual beginning, it is even referred to as a "fragment".

Change attempts

In order to undo the metrical damage to the Psalm, which was caused by later copyists, there were some attempts at conversion:

Gustav Bickell 1 2 3 4th 6th 5 7th
Julius Wellhausen 1 2 3 4ab 6th 5 4c 7th
Frants Buhl 1 5c 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th
Willy Staerk 1 5b 2 3 6th 4c, 4a, b 5 7th
Hermann Gunkel 1a 2 1b 5c 7th 3 6th 4c, 4a, 4b 5b

Dating

The psalm is usually dated to the Persian period, since the psalm must have been written at a time when Israel must have had a large extent as far as Ethiopia . Friedrich Baethgen and Hans Keßler date the psalm to the pre-exilic period due to the mention of the city of Babel .
