Gustav Bickell
Gustav Wilhelm Hugo Bickell (born July 7, 1838 in Kassel , † January 15, 1906 in Vienna ) was a German orientalist . He was considered one of the best experts on the Syrian language and wrote numerous writings on Syrian manuscripts, the Syrian Church Fathers and the Old Testament.
Life
His father Johann Wilhelm Bickell (1799–1848) was Professor of Canon Law at the University of Marburg , most recently Minister of Justice of Hessen-Kassel . Gustav Bickell studied theology and linguistics in Marburg and Halle from 1857 and became a private lecturer for Semitic and Indo-European languages in Marburg in 1862, the following year he taught the same subjects at the University of Giessen . In the hymns of the Syrian ascetic Ephrem , which he transcribed in London, he found for himself a clear testimony to the Immaculate Conception of Mary, as it is also taught by the Catholic Church. As a result, he converted to the Catholic Church on November 5, 1865. After his conversion he entered the Fulda seminary and was ordained a priest in 1867.
He then taught oriental languages at the Münster Academy and became an associate professor in 1871. At this time he became a staunch advocate of the papal doctrine of infallibility . In 1874 he became professor for Christian archeology and Semitic languages at the University of Innsbruck . In 1891 he was appointed to the University of Vienna , where he was professor of Semitic languages. In 1892 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences. In 1901 he was elected a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Bickell was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery .
