Herbert Mehler (* 1949 in Steinau (Petersberg) ) is a German sculptor .

life and work

Mehler gained his first artistic experience with his father, the wood sculptor Franz Mehler. After completing his training as a sculptor, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg from 1972 to 1976 . Together with his wife, the painter and sculptor Sonja Edle von Hoeßle, he founded the "riedenheim project" in 2000 on an old farm in Riedenheim / Lower Franconia ; In the barn, in the studio and on the sculpture meadow, exhibitions and cultural events took place on over 500 m².

Works by Mehler have been and are exhibited in numerous museums, galleries and in public spaces. a. in the Schlossmuseum Aschaffenburg (1989), in the Artothek Nürnberg (1990), in the Artothek Krefeld (1998), in the city collections Schweinfurt (2000), in the Wasser- und Schifffahrtsamt Schweinfurt, in the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea "Il Conventino" Monteciccardo / Italy (2003), in the Museum am Dom and the Museum im Kulturspeicher Würzburg (2006) as well as in the Federal Labor Office in Nuremberg, the Lower Franconia State Insurance Institute and the Badische Stahlwerke Kehl . In 2008, six exhibits from the “Kavex” series were on view on the grounds of the Elisabeth Herzberge Hospital , Berlin. The 7.20 m high sculpture “BELLA DONNA” by Mehler has been standing on the so-called “Sculpture Bank” at the Old Port of Würzburg since July 2009 . On Stresemann-Ufer, Mainz, his approximately 8 m high sculpture Vita, made of Corten steel , was installed as part of the open-air gallery in Mainz. In 2017 Mehler presented 37 large sculptures together with the sculptor Thomas Röthel at the 11th Sculpture Mile in Ansbach under the title "Steel Worlds" . The art mile stretched from the Hofgarten and Schlossplatz over the promenade to the historic old town.

Mehler and his wife moved to Eisingen , Würzburg district in 2016 , and started the Erbachshof Art Project there . It was opened in 2018 with the exhibition TOCCARE with installations by Mimmo Roselli in the sculpture garden. Mehler and his wife live and work in Eisingen and Kranidi (Greece).

In addition to steel sculptures, Mehler made special drawings using chalk and charcoal on cardboard.
