Art in public space in Langenhagen
This list shows art in public space in Langenhagen in Lower Saxony .
The city of Langenhagen is known nationwide for intensive phases in the realization of art in public spaces . This development began in the 1980s and led to five sculpture symposia. The nationally recognized series of exhibitions "on site - art in urban situations" followed in the 1990s. As part of this exhibition series, curated by Achim Könnecke in 1992 and by Kai Bauer from 1993 to 1998, internationally known artists such as Yoko Ono, Karin Sander, Thomas Hirschhorn, Roman Signer and others were invited to temporary interventions in public space . Accompanying catalogs documented the art actions. With the open competition "99 locations" in the context of the EXPO 2000 in Hanover , the last large-scale exhibition of art in public space was successful. Numerous works of art can be found in the cityscape of Langenhagen, some of which are internationally or nationally recognized artists.
Langenhagen stepped into the limelight through the internationally acclaimed temporary action by Yoko Ono , who presented bare buttocks in a black and white motif in her performance A Celebration of Being Human at numerous locations in Langenhagen such as tram stations, bus stops, billboards in a black and white motif .
The documentation and public presentation of art in public space is one of the goals of the Lower Saxony Building Culture Network. The digital documentation on the city of Langenhagen is currently still at the beginning of its development and will be continued on an ongoing basis.

---|---|---|---|
July 1990 Painted sandstone, 125 × 60 × 75 |
Franz Burkhardt | Julio is sitting in front of the adult education center - and also in front of the Langenhagen indoor swimming pool before the demolition . The happy musician with a yellow hat and bright red accordion by Franz Burkhardt (* 1966 in Wolfenbüttel) occupies this place on the wall so naturally that it is hardly perceived as art. The sculpture was commissioned for the entrance area of the downstairs . From the Julio sculpture, a sculpture path stretches along Konrad-Adenauer-Straße in an easterly direction to the Elia Church. | |
Two heads 1986 Sandstone, 90 × 95 × 50 |
Ulla Nentwig | In front of the adult education center on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße, another work of art is a face of Ulla Nentwig (born 1955 in Hanover) on a flat concrete base. If you take a closer look, two human heads, close to one another, peer out from a block of Obernkirchen sandstone , looking in opposite directions (1st Langenhagen Sculpture Symposium). Maybe one of them looks after the indoor pool that has disappeared? | |
Salix × chrysocoma (weeping willow) 1987 Bronze, 60 × 3209 × 70 |
Michael Rodemer | In the inner courtyard of the school center there is a branch that looks like it has broken off under a tree ... a bronze sculpture by Michael Rodemer (* 1953 in Springfield / Ill (USA)). The branch originally comes from a weeping willow on the school property; the bronze duplicate perpetuates the beauty of nature and sensitizes passers-by to take a closer look: This is not just an old branch lying around (2nd Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium).
In preparation for the extension to the school center, the work of art has been (temporarily) removed and secured since October 2010. |
|
Obelisk 2000 Wire, glass bottles, 700 × 80 × 80 |
Michael Deiml | The seven-meter-high obelisk by Michael Deiml (* 1949) has stood in front of the Langenhagen school center in 99 locations since the exhibition held in the context of EXPO 2000 until 2011. Around 800 bottles fill a light wire sculpture; The white bottles at the top are empty and shine brightly in the sunlight, while the mostly colored bottles at the bottom are filled with Langenhagener all kinds of things; In an art campaign, students filled their wishes for the future in texts or materially like a message in a bottle.
The obelisk first stood next to the town hall in Vaihingen an der Enz in 1990, and later also in Kevelaer and Schwetzingen. Due to a structural expansion of the Langenhagen school center, the work of art was dismantled in a civic action and rebuilt in early July 2012 on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße at the entrance to the city park. |
|
Untitled 1989 Limewood, 620 × 159 × 100 |
Rolf Sextro | Opposite the school center there is an untitled wooden sculpture by Rolf Sextro (* 1956 in Bramsche) directly on the sidewalk at the confluence of Schönefelder Straße and Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. Even if the figure is referred to as a giraffe by the Langenhageners because of its long neck , it remains a strange being and its fragility appears quite vulnerable in view of the compact development (IV. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium).
The installation of Sextro was dismantled in September 2013 for technical reasons and is currently being revised. |
|
Plinth III 1988–1990 |
James Reineking | This steel sculpture by the American artist James Reineking (1937-2018) Plinth III is located east of the town hall on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße. A circular segment-shaped plate is placed on a square base plate in the middle of the corner and on the concave side the viewer conveys something protective ( 99 points of view ).
The steel sculpture is due to the pollution that occurred at the instigation of the Kulturstiftung Langenhagen e. V. has been cleaned and looks almost like new. |
|
Wind objects 1990 two-part wood-steel construction coated with polyester, 660 × 80 × 60 |
Jürgen Friede | The towering sculpture by Jürgen Friede (* 1954 in Veerßen Kr. Uelzen) stands on a small hill on Konrad-Adenauer-Straße and dominates the scenery. The sculpture rises into the sky like two corresponding ventilation shafts and asserts itself against the high-storey residential buildings as a counterpart (V. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium). | |
Labyrinth 1989 Sandstone |
Mathias Kadolph | This sculpture stands (lies) in the Konrad-Adenauer-Straße at the level of the entrance area of the Gutzmann School in a lawn. | |
New beginning, eruption, breakthrough 1996 |
Christel Lechner | The multicultural women's group by Christel Lechner (* 1947) is in the city center on the street Walsroder a fictitious stop in front of the Utopia as a highly visible result of the 99 positions . | |
Location 2007 |
Ulla Nentwig | The sculpture Gebundenes Steinfeld by Ulla Nentwig (* 1955 in Hanover), composed of large stones, was on the market square for around 20 years ; the stones symbolized the rural villages of the city of Langenhagen. The work of art was moved to the forum and reorganized by the artist under the name Verortung . | |
Pedestrian sculpture 1997–2000 |
Till Hausmann | The pedestrian sculpture by Till Hausmann (* 1953) is on the forum. This bright red foot is the trademark of the temporary exhibition 99 Viewpoints held on the occasion of EXPO 2000 . Sculptures in Langenhagen , which transformed the entire city park into a temporary art museum for a few months. | |
Cuboid 1987 |
Reinhard Buxel | Reinhard Buxel (* 1953 in Amtshausen) matched stones of different sizes to one another and put them together to form a self-contained cuboid on the market square on the play corner to the north . Strangely, the massive stone, which makes up almost half of the whole, lies on top and can be carried by the much smaller stones. The weight of the stone holds the whole thing together, weighing on the little one.
This block stands unobtrusively between the play equipment and entices you to climb. In the first few years the children look incomprehensibly upwards, from around ten years they then manage to climb and look down from the work of art at the market. The cuboid has become an important feature for children and adults. As part of the redesign of the market square, the cuboid was moved from its original place in 2013 and is now encircled by other street furniture directly in front of the adjoining brick facade. |
|
Fountain year |
Frauke Wehberg | In front of the inner courtyard of the town hall is the fountain with a female figure by the Schleswig-Holstein artist Frauke Wehberg (* 1940). | |
Fountain East Passage year |
Christiane Möbus | This fountain by Christiane Möbus (* 1947 in Celle) is located in the area of the Ostpassage. The water jets spray into the fountain from the 11 nozzles of the “hydrant”, which unfortunately happens very rarely for technical reasons. | |
Untitled 1990 Oak wood 280 × 270 × 182 |
Siegfried Pietrusky | In the city park to the right of the music shell there is an untitled wooden figure by Siegfried Pietrusky (* 1952 in Jade) standing on the lawn. The artist built a sculpture from the hardly worked material, which then has to stand up on its own. She stands there on the meadow and exudes a stable calm (V. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium). In September 2012 the sculpture was removed due to damage. | |
Play about violence 1986 Sandstone, 200 × 20 × 150 |
Hans-Tewes Schadwinkel | Only a few meters further behind Niederrader Allee is a stone sculpture by Hans-Tewes Schadwinkel (* 1937 in Neuklücken / Neumark), almost hidden in the bushes; it's about a play about violence . The relief shows three soldiers at war; one recklessly climbs over a wounded man to throw a hand grenade and cause further disaster. (1st Langenhagen Sculpture Symposium). | |
Swimming fish 1990 Cast iron, 11 parts |
Bong-Kil Kim | In the city park, the fish not only swim in the water, you can also see and touch them on the bank. A whole school of cast iron fish pierce the sward and seem to gasp for air? The almost natural-looking fish by the Korean artist Bong-Kil Kim (* 1955 in Seoul) create a kind of friendly amazement in the viewer (V. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium). | |
Underworld 1988 Concrete, steel, embankment, staircase depth 230 cm |
Alke Reeh | From a distance you can suddenly see a railing, when you get closer it turns out to be a staircase leading into the depths. However, there is no door downstairs. The building, hastily referred to as a bunker , within a 100-square-meter, knee-high heaped facility, also includes four rectangular concrete cuboids, obviously ventilation structures for an imaginary structure under the sward. Here the artist Alke Reeh (* 1960 in Munich) created an opaque system; involuntarily one wonders what it could look like down there and, above all, how to get in there (III. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium). Ghostly relic or art? | |
Foundation 1988 Metal, wood |
Markus Jung | High seat | |
Adapter 1990 Metal, concrete, 34 × 29 × 400 |
Sybille Berke | At the V. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium, Sybille Berke (* 1949 in Ulm - 1998 in Düsseldorf) practically hidden various barely noticeable works of art in the city park. The adapter piece on the short side of the concrete cuboid know behind the benches you have to to find it behind the foliage and the earth; and the piece of precast concrete that goes with it can hardly be interpreted as art. The network of works created is a typical installation of this time of upheaval. Unfortunately the other parts of the ensemble are (currently) no longer available. | |
House for the Sun and Moon 1990 Stainless steel, steel, gouache, varnish 285 × 30 × 63 |
Wolf Gloßner | The sculpture House for Sun and Moon by Wolf Gloßner (1946-2016) stands on the axis to the church square in the city park . With a seemingly archaic severity, the sculpture occupies a central position in the northern meadow area and allows the viewer a narrow view through the barely perceptible slit. | |
Studies of Human Being 1987 Sandstone, seven-part |
Werner Ratering | On the meadow in the Heestern there is a multi-part stone sculpture by Werner Ratering (* 1954 in Bad Bentheim; † 2017) as a symbol for the early phase of the incarnation. The process of getting up is sketched in different stages; from the embryonic core form to lying, kneeling, squatting to stretched standing. If you walk along this route in the Heestern, you will imperceptibly straighten yourself up (2nd Langenhagen Sculpture Symposium). | |
Retreat in 1989 Black marble 220 × 37 × 49 |
Dietlind Petzold | The marble sculpture Einkehr by Dietlind Petzold (* 1941 in Dortmund) is almost hidden in the green of the Heestern : a rectangular column with an opening fruit bud peeling out from the matt gray surface (IV. Langenhagener Sculpture Symposium in 1989). | |
Giant colored pencils 2005 about 180 cm |
Fritz Pietz | In front of the parish hall of the Elisabeth Church there is a rather eye-catching colored sculpture made of upright crayons. The giant colored pencil sculpture was created - as in over a hundred other places - under the guidance of the artist Fritz Pietz for the Kirchentag in Hanover. For a painting campaign, the artist provided 2 m long sharpened and pre-lacquered logs, which were then painted with beautiful patterns by children. This work, reminiscent of Australian art, shows the bundling power of the meetinghouse, which absorbs every color. | |
The kinetic object 69/258/30 1969 |
Hans Geipel | The very delicate metal sculpture by Hans Geipel (1927–2007), whose shape is reminiscent of an oversized drum kit, is hidden behind the green and off the beaten path in the area of the clinic south of Stadtparkallee. Geipel's sculptures are considered "machines of meditation". The disc tree came to Hanover as part of the “Street Art Experiment” and first stood on the lawn next to the opera house from 1971 to 1977, before it was parked almost unrecognized on the clinic area of the LH Hanover in Langenhagen. | |
Rotation IV 2012 Base 102, work 120 high |
Jochen Weise | The colorful sculpture "Rotation IV" by Jochen Weise from Hanover is located in the Eichenpark nursing home. It is made of ceramic with the dimensions 60 × 60 × 200 cm. | |
Inner world 1994/2011 180 wide × 180 high |
Uwe Spiekermann | In front of the raw house is the stone sculpture Inner World by the Langenhagen-based sculptor Uwe Spiekermann. The sculpture from Rohrschacher sandstone was created in June 1994 during an artist symposium in Switzerland, it was set up in front of the municipal art school, which was then located in the Rohdehaus, in October 1994. The sculpture consists of 13 individual parts, which are restored after processing by the sculptor with synthetic resin were glued together and thus allow glimpses into the interior. The artistic work is inside and shows numerous noses from different angles. It should encourage people to stick their noses in. The work is owned by the artist.
In 2011, the Uwe Spiekermann sculpture was expanded by six cubes made of Rohrschacher sandstone in order to recognize the Langenhagen couple Lina and Rudolf Kienert for their attitude and active support for Jews in the III. To honor rich. |
|
Eye hand 1999 |
Ren Rong | During the exhibition 99 Standpunkte , the hand of the Chinese artist Ren Rong (* 1960) was in the green area on Ehlersstrasse. Later this unusual red steel sculpture was placed in the depot for a few years. From 2012 the hand of the eye will be on the newly designed Kaltenweider Platz as the new center of the Weiherfeld. | |
Hamlet 1990 |
Franz Burkhardt | The stone sculpture Hamlet on a raised plinth in front of the theater hall in Rathenaustraße, like Julio, is by Franz Burkhardt; both sculptures were acquired by the sound box. Hamlet shows us the way to the slightly lower entrance to the theater hall from afar. | |
Fountain system at the Robert Koch School as art in construction (before / after) | Werner Ratering | The fountain in front of the Robert Koch Secondary School in Rathenaustraße is the result of an art in building competition in the context of the new building at the time and was therefore something special in the cityscape. The fountain and the steep steles were used by generations of school children to climb and spray. Behind the fountain you can see the sculpture in the theater hall.
In October 2011, the entire facility was dismantled and mothballed without any communication with the citizens concerned. This separated an important work of art from its associated building. The spatial and cozy atmosphere of the forecourt has given way to an open void. |

Monuments in public space
There are numerous monuments, memorials, plaques and memorial stones in the urban area of Langenhagen. The older monuments are predominantly war memorials, of which there are said to be over 100,000 in Germany. Friedrich Wilhelm III. In 1813 issued the ordinance on the foundation of a permanent monument for those who remained in the struggle for independence and the fatherland . A law of 1890 transferred the authority to erect monuments to the municipalities.
War memorials to commemorate those who participated in the Franco-German War of 1870/71 were erected in numerous communities . Many memorials to those who died in the First World War followed. For the victims of the Second World War, the existing monuments were mostly added. In addition, monuments and stones point to the victims of National Socialism .

Instead of training in barracks, he focused on long-distance rides, solid dressage and jumping training. The high level of training of the Prussian cavalry is largely due to him. unknown | Location: Le Trait Square in Godshorn. Front in German, back in Russian and Polish. Text in German: Langenhagen / Godshorn history and commemorative table The dead children of the forced laborers Maternity facilities for pregnant Eastern workers and Polish women were set up in the vicinity of many of the larger armaments centers during World War II (1939–1945). The background was the kidnapping and labor deployment of Eastern European women in the German Reich. Treated as enemies by the German fascists, they had to cope with everyday war life. She and her children were racially undesirable . In the city of Hanover, around 60,000 forced laborers were housed in several hundred camps, including children. Some were taken to homes where they were left defenseless for destruction. Others lived in camps with family members so that they could find help. Much in this situation depended on the behavior of those responsible on site. Whether and how the children could survive also depended on the decision of the employer or the camp manager. Infants had the lowest chance of survival. They were born in special facilities under catastrophic conditions. Their diet and medical care were very poor and the hygienic conditions were bad. In Hanover, as in other places, there were barracks for women in maternity leave. The Lagergemeinschaft Hannover eV, an association of armaments companies, operated some of these barracks. Initially, mothers and children were housed in the Ricklingen-Wettberger Mühle community camp since March 1943. Then in August 1943 they were taken to the Godshorn camp (Schulenburger Mühle), which existed until the end of the war. Contemporary witnesses assume a very high death rate - up to 75 percent. The children were buried anonymously in the Seelhorster cemetery. There has been no criminal prosecution of the perpetrators in the post-war period to this day. |

In the years 1992 to 1997 the city of Langenhagen entered the discussion about art in public space with a very ambitious project “on site - art in urban situations”, which was noticed beyond the city limits . The city gained the curator Kai Bauer as a speaker for the visual arts and invited numerous artists who were already active around the world or - at this point in time - little known artists to Langenhagen for temporary projects.
The overview of the 16 projects with texts by Kai Bauer comes from the chronicle 1992–1997 (Langenhagen (Hrsg.), 1997: 49-55).

Lighting on the Neue Bult racecourse in 1992 |
Angelika Schirmer | On the night of September 4th to 5th, 1992, Angelika Schirmer had selected groups of hedges, trees and bushes on the grounds of the Neue Bult racecourse illuminated with floodlights. A video recording of the lighting is shown in the foyer of the town hall. | |
Ambulatory aquarium 1992 |
Mischa Kuball | Mischa Kuball has a temporary installation from an empty shop in the market hall with overlapping projections that show geometric shapes and architectural motifs, radiate out and enter into a strong dialogue with the natural daylight projections through the outer windows. | |
CAR FLYING 1992 |
Ottmar Hörl | Ottmar Hörl (* 1950) records all the sounds of a flight from Hanover-Langenhagen to Frankfurt am Main on tape. This tape is handed out as an audio cassette in an edition of 10,000 to every Langenhagen resident who has a car with a cassette recorder. | |
Shelter / Refuge 1993 |
Antoni Malinovsky | Antoni Malinowski (* 1955, lives in London) develops a series of wall drawings in the CCL shopping center, in the bare corridors behind the shops that lead to offices, practices and warehouses. From traces of movement to closed forms to spatial representations, energy flows are made graphically visible with small strips of roofing paper stuck on. Surfaces structured from tiny field symbols are transformed into white floor drawings in the stairwell that relate to the incidence of light and topographical ideas | |
Six advertising pillars in the urban space in 1993 |
Karin Sander | Karin Sander (* 1957) had advertising pillars in the city wall papered with white woodchip for ten days. The surface structure of private interiors is turned outwards into public projection surfaces. | |
Level table 1993 |
Christian Hasucha | Christian Hasucha (* 1955) finds a high table in a snack bar in Langenhagen as an intersection between private and public space. The height of the table top of 52, 301 m above sea level is marked by a surveying team with adhesive tape on 5000 posts of lanterns, electricity pylons and traffic signs throughout the city as a reference zone. The markings on the masts at different heights show that Langenhagen is not as level as one would assume. The population is informed about the project via a direct mail. Because of violent public protests, the city council has cut the budget for the “suburb” series by a third for the coming year. | |
Liebscher / Lehanka in Langenhagen 1994 |
Martin Liebscher , Marko Lehanka | Martin Liebscher (* 1964) and Marko Lehanka (* 1961) spend ten days in Langenhagen. You conduct interviews with a wide variety of Langenhagen citizens with the same questionnaire ("Do you like Langenhagen? - What are your favorite places? - What was the most outstanding event in Langenhagen recently?" Etc.). The city portrait drawn by the residents leads to a video documentation and an artist edition of the Frankfurt art magazine "ROGUE". | |
MICROMACROSCOPICS 1994 |
Michael Ross | The New York artist Michael Ross (* 1955) sets the route for a walk through the city center. At five steep slopes, he stamps poetic sentences on the metal surfaces of street poles with mint stamps. The font size is 0.3 mm, so the viewer needs a magnifying glass and a map in order to find and decipher the sentences that expand the respective place into “systems of thought”. | |
A Celebration of Human Being 1994 |
Yoko Ono | Yoko Ono (* 1933) develops a motif that shows a stylized buttocks and adds the text: “We are beautiful. We are fun. We are mammals without tails. “With the help of sponsors, a gigantic poster campaign, which after the federal elections also extends to advertising space for the political parties, and scattered stickers (postcards, T-shirts, umbrellas, stickers, etc.) will be used to create the motif in the city area distributed and distributed to departing passengers at the airport. A lot of media coverage deals with the popularity of the artist. The budget for the “vorort” series will be increased by a third. | |
The discourse takes place here in 1995 |
Ralf de Moll, Christiane Delbrügge | A white cube stands on Langenhagen's market square for ten days. It stands for the idea of the art space as a “whitecube” and the associated form of art presentation and viewing. Its dimensions are 3 × 3 × 3 m. There is a lettering on three walls: “The discourse is taking place here.” In the fourth wall there is a door that is locked. Behind this door the babble of voices of a crowd. The CD by Christiane Dellbrügge (* 1961 in USA) and Ralf de Moll (* 1961) can be heard: The discourse takes place here. | |
Fontana di Piaggio 1995 |
Roman Signer | In one of the districts of Langenhagen, a blue three-wheeled vehicle from the Piaggio brand is standing on a sidewalk on a busy main street. The parked vehicle is connected to a public hydrant with a hose, from which high pressure water shoots into the interior of the vehicle. The booming and hissing noise mingles unexpectedly with the usual everyday noise. Every day the Swiss action artist Roman Signer (* 1938) drives to a different place in the city of Langenhagen to set up his splashing and splashing automobile there for eight hours. | |
Mind 1995 |
Les Levine | The New York media and concept artist Les Levine (* 1935 in Dublin) is developing a three-part project for Langenhagen: A city-wide poster campaign with 52 billboards shows the brightly colored motif “SEE YOUR MIND”, which fixes the viewer through glasses. In the CCL shopping center, 5000 boxes with the product design “MIND” and the specification of the “ingredients” (acceptance, affection, aggression, ambition etc.) are offered and sold for five DM; the proceeds will be donated to a fund for Bosnian children. A short commercial for “MIND” is running on regional television news (“Hallo Niedersachsen”). The boxes (2500 pieces) not sold during the campaign are on permanent loan in the Sprengelmuseum. | |
media interfaceangenhagen 1996 |
Georg Winter | The artist Georg Winter (* 1962), who trades under the name “Ukiyo Cameras”, has 30 test households acquired through a poster campaign and a direct mail. You are taking part in a pilot project for interactive television and will receive a test monitor with a four-page questionnaire delivered free of charge for one week. The “high black monitor” developed for this test cannot be connected to the TV network. The developments in the electrotechnical field are deliberately withdrawn in this attempt in order to address the reception situation and its starting conditions spatially and personally by reducing stimuli. During the test period, the artist is available for discussions in a mobile information office on Schützenplatz. Half a year later, the evaluations of the anonymous questionnaires will be shown in an exhibition on the project in the town hall foyer. | |
Art gallery precarious 1996 |
Thomas Hirschhorn | The Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn (* 1957 in Bern), who lives in Paris, builds a transparent art hall out of foil, plexiglass and roof battens. 36 fluorescent tubes turn the hall into a light that can be seen from afar day and night. The hall cannot be entered, but Hirschhorn's drawings and aluminum objects are installed inside and can be viewed from all sides. The selected installation site is precarious: where Langenhagen appears to be both international and interchangeable: near the approach path to the airport, almost within earshot of the motorway, next to the car market, where trucks from Lithuania, Estonia and Russia transport used vehicles from sellers in the Hanover area and According to the police report, the criminal energy is high. | |
Comes to Art 1997 |
Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler | The twins Christine and Irene Hohenbüchler (* 1964 in Vienna) work under the primacy of committed participation with patients in psychiatry. A painting workshop is being built in the rooms of the former clinic laundry and is developing into an open space in which everyone could paint and draw. | |
Extra-parliamentary situation in 1997 |
pttred | The arrest of Ulrike Meinhof on June 15, 1972 at Walsroder Strasse 11 stuck in the collective memory of the city of Langenhagen. 25 years later, the artist group pttred (paint the town red) commemorates a week-long artistic activity (February 24-28, 1997 ) on it. Stefan Micheel (* 1955) and Hans Hs Winkler (* 1955) first point to a (fictitious) event with 59 posters hung in the city area, thus triggering a heated discussion: "Ulrike Meinhof speaks about her arrest in Langenhagen." The lecture announced on February 28, 1997 on the market square with a lectern and chairs for spectators offered space for reflection, after all, nobody appeared; the audience remained to themselves and discussed the unclear situation. |
99 points of view
99 standpoints was the first project of the Kulturstiftung Langenhagen e. V. with numerous works set up in the city park. At EXPO 2000 - the world exhibition in Hanover - Langenhagen also offered something special: a nationally significant exhibition of art in public space in Langenhagen's city park. A group of people from business, city administration and committed citizens founded the Kulturstiftung Langenhagen e. V. and invited to an open competition across Europe. A jury selected from around 300 applications and Langenhagen had a unique exhibition on art in public spaces.
The overview of the 62 projects comes from the documentation of the Kulturstiftung Langenhagen e. V. 99 points of view. Sculptures in Langenhagen . Galerie Depelmann Edition Verlag GmbH, Langenhagen, with texts by Friederike Weimar (Kulturstiftung, 2000).

This bright red foot is the trademark of the temporary exhibition 99 Viewpoints held on the occasion of EXPO 2000 . Sculptures in Langenhagen , which transformed the entire city park into a temporary art museum for a few months. The pedestrian sculpture is part of a larger project in which the Düsseldorf-based artist deals with the situation of pedestrians in traffic. | |
2 New beginnings, eruptions, breakthroughs 1996 |
Christel Lechner | The group of six people led by Christel Lechner (* 1947) stood in the city center on Walsroder Straße in front of the pavilion of the Langenhagen Cultural Foundation, which was then set up from the forum. After the exhibition 99Standpunkte, a similar group of people was purchased for this location as permanent art in public space. | |
3 mooring 1999 Powder-coated steel |
Georg Zimmermann | The work by Georg Zimmermann (* 1960 in Kevelaer) describes a lens body, the top surface of which is broken open irregularly. The emerging crack, which describes a three-dimensional body, is embedded in the visible surface. The freelance sculptor in Krefeld deals with the subject of time and transience . The landing stage in Langenhagen was on the forum directly in front of the exhibition pavilion and thus offered visitors a kind of landing stage to access the exhibition on art in public space. | |
4 Obelisk 1990–2000 Wire, glass bottles, |
Michael Deiml | The seven-meter-high obelisk by Michael Deiml (* 1949 in Prague) stood directly in front of the Langenhagen school center. Around 800 bottles fill a light wire sculpture; The white bottles at the top are empty and shine brightly in the sunlight, while the mostly colored bottles in the lower area are filled with Langenhagener all kinds of things. The inscriptions, which are usually found on the surface of the obelisks, extol the deeds of the pharaohs and popes. The inscriptions are in the Langenhagen obelisk; In an art campaign, students from the school center filled in their wishes for the future in texts or materially like a message in a bottle.
The obelisk first stood next to the town hall in Vaihingen an der Enz in 1990, and later also in Kevelaer. Due to a structural expansion of the school center, it is necessary to move the work of art to another location. In a civic action, the obelisk was dismantled on October 29, 2011 and rebuilt in another location in July 2012. |

5 eye hand 1999 Cutting iron |
Ren Rong | The artist Ren Rong (* 1960 in Nanjing) explains: “The motif 'eye hand' has accompanied my art for many years. The eye sees everything, consciously and unconsciously, symbolizes curiosity and vigilance and, together with the hand, forms the creative force. ”(Rong in Kulturstiftung, 2000: 80). Six, not five, fingers approximate a representation of eyelashes. The eye hand was originally in a natural rust state and was in the green area on Ehlersstraße in summer 2000. The work is now painted in a strong red and has been on Kaltenweider Platz in front of the Kaltenweide S-Bahn station since the end of May 2012. | |
6 Reverence 1997 three-part, 80 cm high |
Darius Zibikas | Darius Zibikas (* 1971 in Siauliai / Lithuania) addresses one of the original motifs of art with his sculpture: good and bad. To do justice to this age-old, eternal theme, he falls back on primitivist models. The work consists of two individual sculptures, which are connected by a taut leather cord. Both individual parts have more feminine shapes, the large one with clearly feminine body parts, the small one with soft curved shapes and the suggestion of a breast. | |
7 Golgotha 1997-98 |
Heinrich Brockmeier | The bronze group consists of three formally strongly reduced steles, which are arranged in a semicircle behind a sculpture that can be interpreted as a lying figure. The shapes are each cut from a block. “The focus of his work is always on people. The human being as a bizarre or tragic figure or as a tormented creature shaken by the blows of fate in life. ”(Becks-Malornay in Kulturstiftung, 2000: 18). | |
9 Anatomy of the Stone 1995 |
Otto Berndt Steffen | Otto Bernd Steffen (* 1951 in Dornreichenbach) places a narrow granite slab upright on a base. A central stripe that runs up one side of the piece is divided into even fields. The artist has worked his way deeper into the stone with each field until he finally breaks through to the other side in the penultimate field. “Ultimately, there are three things that decide my sculptural work; the thought, the particularity of the material and the light; I have to make sure that everyone gets their rights and supports my idea with its possibilities. ”(Steffen in Kulturstiftung, 2000: 102). | |
10 Art Authorization Machine 1988/1999 Welded metal cuboid |
Curth Stiliachus | "The German Art Authorization Card serves to continuously secure controllable artistic authorization" (Stiliachus in Kulturstiftung, 2000: 106). The artist Curth Stiliachus (* 1953 in Bonn) has listed a number of aspects for his official art authorization machines that outline the meaning of the machine. He sees it as an accent against the emerging isolation of autonomous art from society and as a satirical on the institutionalization of art and its forms of expression . | |
12 Spatial hatching 1981–1997 Steel, 235 × 1450 × 130 |
Ritzi Jacobi | The sculpture by Ritzi Jacobi (* 1941 in Bucharest) consists of steel rods of different strengths and shapes, which are related to each other in a supporting and floating manner. Over a length of more than 14 m, they develop a line of lines with compaction from bundled plates with different directional impulses. | |
13 Frozen Visions 1987 Steel, 265 × 60 × 180 |
HAWOLI | The Lower Saxon artist Hans Wolfgang Lingemann HAWOLI (* 1935 in Bleckede) designed this work from eight phonoliths and eight steel frames. The stones in the individual frames stand up one after the other and show a sequence of movements. The eighth triangle is empty and means that the process is not complete. The artist has thus created exciting contrasts.
HAWOLI has been dealing with the tension between nature and culture for around 30 years. This work was previously shown in a similar form in Kiel (1987) and was later shown again in Göttingen (2006). |
|
14 O. T. 2000 |
Angelika Reinecke | Angelika Reinecke (* 1953 in Nuremberg) creates playful figures from brightly painted steel tubes and steel plates that stand on claw-like feet. | |
15 Meditation 1994 Norwegian granite |
Wilfried Behre | Because the stone has been around for billions of years, Behre (* 1956 in Hanover) meets it with fascination and respect. "I have to give him a chance to show that eternity that is in him" (Behre in Kulturstiftung, 2000: 12). He succeeds in doing this by creating lasting forms, often in months of work. | |
16 White column 1999 Plastic, 360 × 65 × 65 |
Leo Hüskes | Hüskes (* 1928 in People - 2012 in Hanover) cut figures out of the plastic stele and welded them back on in an offset manner. Figures are on the one hand birds that fly to the sky and on the other hand falling people. The artist's starting point for this work is the ancient stele and the Christian statue, which have served as information carriers for thousands of years. | |
17 Rondo 87 1987 Corten steel |
Hans Dieter Bohnet | Lt. Brockhaus is called Rondo [ital.] “All-round music. Form type ". Hans Dieter Bohnet (* 1926 in Trossingen) translated this form of expression of music into sculpture. Starting from intensive studies of nature and anatomy, the artist came to abstraction early on. | |

21 9 boxes 1987 Steel, 5 mm, 9 parts between 30 × 40 × 40 and 60 × 60 × 65 |
Helga Kellerer | The title could have been The Meeting of the Boxes . In this work by Helga Kellerer (* 1961 in Mainburg), each box stands alone, but the open lid creates a connection between the objects. The open lids and the red interior are reminiscent of open mouths, as if the boxes had met for a chat. | |
22 o. T. 1978 Polyester, 200 × 250 × 50 |
Gabriella Fekete | The shape of the three polyester blocks by Gabriella Fekete (* 1944 in Budapest) is reminiscent of sarcophagi, if it weren't for the red color, which gives the work a contemporary, modern look. The artist's work cannot be classified and ticked off immediately. Rather, Gabriella Fekete plays with the deception of the viewer. | |
23 1.3.t 1993 Granite / wire, 130 × 100 × 70 |
Markus Stangl | The viewer involuntarily wonders when this work will collapse, how long will this filigree wire construction carry the granite block, which weighs 1.3 t. 25 Floating Cube 1992 Aluminum / stainless steel |
Günther Zins | Günther Zins (* 1951 in Butzbach) created a space-floating work, hung it - you only see it at second glance - on ropes that are hung between the trees. After a phase in which the artist painted, he began to create works in steel and aluminum. | |

Bruno Steiger | The idea of removing objects from their ancestral context is the basic idea of Bruno Steiger (* 1955 in Algetshausen / Switzerland). The work is a body that irritates and is reminiscent of the material warehouse in a carpenter's workshop. | |
31 Heavenly 1998 |
Beate Spitzmüller | A field of buds stands on a meadow in the city park. Forty flower buds sculpted from clay by Beate Spitzmüller (* 1963 in Offenburg) and each placed on an iron rod form a delicate sculpture. 39 Varieta de tempi 1993 Shipbuilding steel, 2100 × 100 |
Uwe Kampf | Uwe Kampf (* 1959 in Wuppertal) joined narrow panels made of shipbuilding steel to form a 21 m long strip. The artist consciously wants to allow the most varied of interpretations. Are preparations being made here for the reception of a high personality and the carpet is rolled out but not yet straightened out? Steel is inherently rigid and immobile, but in this formation appears almost soft and flowing. | |
40 Containing 1993 Steel, e.g. Partly colored |
