Old Airport (Hannover)
Alter Flughafen is the name of a commercial area in place of a former airport and a street in Hanover that connects Vahrenwalder Strasse with Kugelfangtrift in the Vahrenheide district .
History and description
Already in the early days of the German Empire and in the late 19th century, a large part of the old heath area north of Vahrenwald , the Vahrenwalder Heide , was used by military units as a parade ground.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Karl Jatho made his first flight attempts here.
Shortly before the First World War , the Vahrenwalder Heide was converted into a flight and airship area in 1912 .
After the former Evershorst military airfield was expanded into an airport suitable for public transport according to plans by Friedrich Wilhelm Petzel in the post-war period , the architect Felix zur Nedden converted a former aircraft hangar into the first terminal building of the new Hanover Airport .
