From 1980 Wolfgang Neß worked in Hanover at the Institute for the Preservation of Monuments and inventoried the architectural and art monuments there, first of the cities of Göttingen and Hanover, then also recorded the objects to be protected in the districts of Göttingen , Goslar , Gifhorn , Helmstedt , Emsland , Soltau-Fallingbostel and the City of Wolfsburg . His work was reflected, for example, in the two volumes of the monument topography Federal Republic of Germany on the Lower Saxony state capital Hanover.

Among the numerous publications by Wolfgang Neß, the writings on technical and industrial monuments were of particular importance in later times . From 1983 he belonged to the industrial monuments working group established by the Association of State Monument Preservators . Other fields of activity were, for example, buildings for ship traffic and supply structures for electricity, gas and water management. Some of the special objects that he has looked after in terms of monument preservation include objects such as the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge in Wilhelmshaven, the transporter bridge over the Oste and the Stöckse potato steaming system .

In 1984 Wolfgang Neß was a founding member of the Association for the Preservation of Architectural Monuments in Wrisbergholzen . The association, which has around 20 active members, deals on a voluntary basis with the preservation of the historical buildings in the entire ensemble of Wrisbergholzen Castle , in particular around the former Count's faience factory Wrisbergholzen .
