history

Memorial stone for Karl Jatho near the former airfield of Hanover-Vahrenwald Airport

As early as 1900, Karl Jatho began his flight attempts on a self-made airfield on the Vahrenwalder Heide. From these beginnings, the Hanover-Vahrenwald Airport later emerged as Hanover's first airport . It was in operation until the end of World War II . During the war it was badly damaged by bombing raids. After the war it was no longer expandable due to the surrounding buildings and was given up. About 5.5 kilometers to the north-west, Hanover Airport was set up in an area that could be expanded outside the city of Hanover .

After the war, the Vahrenheide district was built on the Vahrenwalder Heide to compensate for the many apartments bombed in World War II. Today the area is again shown as Vahrenwalder Heide in the latest city maps.

Others

The aviation pioneer Gustav Tweer had a fatal accident on November 1, 1916 when he crashed with his plane on the Vahrenwalder Heide. Tweer flew in a new type of aircraft on behalf of the Hannoversche Waggonfabrik .
