Heinrich Brockmeier (* 1938 in Berlin ) is a German draftsman and sculptor who works primarily with watercolors and ink or in bronze , iron , mixed media and who is "constantly looking for new ways of expression".

Brockmeier is represented in many cities in North Rhine-Westphalia with his sculptures and busts . For example, there are three works by him on the Herten sculpture trail .
Evaluation of the work
Painting
The portrait art represents a focus in the work of Brockmeier. a. Portraits of Ernst Bloch , Otto Wels , Käthe Kollwitz , Salvador Dalí and Picasso . Here the artist emphasizes the theme of transience by realizing during the work that the "human face is built on the skull, on the skull". One of the approaches is to create a series of portraits of the same person or to age the halves of the face differently.
Object art, sculpture
Brockmeier's bronze work focuses on the human figure. The design language is reduced to the essentials and tends towards abstraction . His sculptures leave "a strict and strongly present impression due to their angular and block-like surfaces". The human figure emerges in the works of art in a wide variety of designs from painterly representational to abstract reduction. Special emphasis is placed on the “dualism of deeply felt joy in being and the shock of transience.” This dichotomy is particularly evident in the so-called tragic figures , which emerged in the early 1980s. Examples are sculptures by Don Quixote , Icarus , Orpheus and Eurydice and Jesus Christ .
As early as the 1970s, he created his so-called extreme figures , who live entirely “from their dynamism and their baroque gestures”. The sculptures are often held in their spatial position with the help of a frame surrounding them, whereby the frame defines the "basic human situation: being enclosed and thus isolated" (Ute Eggeling) or "being restricted by conventions" and "social compulsion" ( Brockmeier).
Another focus is on variants of the equestrian statue , whereby less “a long iconographic tradition” (Ute Eggeling) of this subject, but rather the common destiny of horse and human (Brockmeier) is thematized. It also plays a role here that Brockmeier considers the horse “the most beautiful animal” (Brockmeier).
From around 1985 a further group of figures was created, the so-called Hebros , individual sculptures which, despite their reduced imagery, are “blocky and clunky”, have a massive upper body and almost vanishingly small head and represent “identification figures” in which the artist can find himself hopes. "These sculptures are the résumé of all my previous debates" (Brockmeier).
