Ren Rong ( Chinese  任 戎 , Pinyin Rèn Róng , * 1960 in Nanjing ) is a German visual artist of postmodernism of Chinese origin. He lives and works mainly in Bonn and Beijing and is considered one of the most internationally known contemporary artists of Chinese origin.

biography

Ren Rong was born in 1960 in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province , and attended middle school there from 1974 to 1979, where he also received an artistic training. From 1982 to 1986 he studied at the local art academy with a focus on oil painting, ink painting and printmaking in the field of socialist realism . He took part in the first group exhibition with other young artists from the province in 1985, and the first solo exhibition followed in 1986.

In connection with his marriage to a German, Ren Rong moved to Bonn , the then capital of the Federal Republic of Germany , in 1986 . The first solo exhibition in Germany followed that same year. From 1987 to 1992 Ren Rong was given a teaching position at the Department of Oriental Languages at the University of Bonn . He taught Chinese ink painting and calligraphy there.

At the same time, Ren Rong studied painting at the Münster Art Academy , which he continued from 1990 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1992 Fritz Schwegler's master class student, followed by several scholarships. In 1996 he organized the touring exhibition China - Contemporary Painting on behalf of the Kunstmuseum Bonn and in collaboration with Dieter Ronte . In 2000 Ren Rong received a visiting professorship at the Hamburg University of Design .

In 2007, Ren Rong acquired the building complex known as Villa Friede in the Mehlem district of Bonn , partially restored it and rebuilt dilapidated areas. A public art and culture center has been opened in parts of the villa, which he opened in June 2013 and where he also lives with his family. A sculpture park is to be set up on an adjacent, undeveloped property belonging to the embassy of the former Republic of Yugoslavia . Due to unclear ownership in the legal successor of Yugoslavia, a short-term acquisition of the site is currently (2013) not yet in sight.

Ren Rong is internationally known for his plant people . As a steel or iron sculpture, shiny or rusty red, wood or paper cut, watercolor or print, wood, wax or lacquer work, the abstract-concrete hybrids stand for a wide variety of statements from the topic of human life. In connection with private photographs and recordings of well-known politicians (e.g. Mao Zedong ), the relationship to the present emerges.

The artist explains this: “My plant people do not allude to any mythology for me. On the other hand, they reflect all the more completely different, i.e. personal things, such as hope, wishes, ambition, lust, fear, positive energy and a lot more ... "

Furthermore, I am also concerned with the relationship between nature and humans and with questions of ecology. Thus, for me, the plant man also stands for the ideal connection between man and nature. As an artist, I don't just want to be in the studio, I also want to communicate with people in order to exchange ideas with them across the most varied of borders. Because only the exchange triggers something new.

Frank Günter Zehnder , introductory speech on the occasion of the exhibition “Let 100 Flowers Bloom” 2012 in the Junkerhaus Simonskall : In his person and in his work you encounter one of the most successful East-West dialogues. As a global artist he lives and works in two continents, hemispheres and countries: in Germany and in China. He was the first artist who was able to exhibit in the People's Republic of China as well as in national China (Taiwan). Today he is also a mediator between Chinese and German culture, as a curator he organized large exhibitions of current Chinese art.

As part of the new publication of the art book “Ren Rong | Plant people in shadow play "described Detlef H. Mache , that" art creates intellectual and philosophical bridges between different "worlds" and forms a communicative dialogue of our time. The encounter with Ren Rong's works is a dialogue between cultures and can be a return to one's own closeness to nature for the art viewer. Motifs and techniques from the Chinese folk art tradition merge with principles of contemporary art to form a fruitful synthesis. "

Sum: Ren Rong's art deals with life itself and does not tell any anecdotes. It stands in the midst of life. It is authentic and autonomous, it is totally unmistakable. His art is not about distant subjects. It's about us.
