Leonard Wübbena (born March 16, 1946 in Funnix / Ostfriesland) is a printmaker and sculptor / metal sculptor of contemporary German sculpture.

Life

After an apprenticeship as a typesetter in the 1960s, he attended the Aachen University of Applied Sciences , design department, and then worked in various activities in the graphic arts industry. From 1972 he worked as a teacher for creative works / art and until 1975 as a lecturer for artistic printing techniques and work in the visual field.

In the 1980s he turned to sculptural work and was active as a sculptor in steel - since 1985 metal sculptor in general. In the beginning, Leonard Wübbena combined found objects and worthless scrap in the working process to create artistic sculptures. He was inspired by sculptors such as the Spaniards Julio González (considered to be the inventor of "iron sculpture") and Picasso , the British Anthony Caro and the American David Smith , whose exhibition at the Center Pompidou in Paris in the summer of 1986 was a key experience for him.

Later he created more and more abstract works of art from several materials such as rollers, tubes, lids, hemispheres, elbows and other raw products and segments of the metal trade. His works are small sculptures, reliefs and free and large sculptures in bronze, iron, steel and chrome-nickel steel. He made a large part of his large contemporary sculptures from COR-TEN steel .

He was the artistic director of the 3rd East Frisian Sculptor Symposium in 1990 and also that of the 2nd Wittmunder Sculptor Symposium in 1994, which u. a. Bernhard Luginbühl , Klaus Duschat , Werner Pokorny and David Lee Thompson were involved.
